Does anyone have any ideas/tips about how to sculpt shoe laces? I don't want it to be too over the top but I also want it to look good. If someone has examples or a tutorial it would be great!

What scale are you going for here?

This is on the boot of an IG soldier. So very small... obnoxiously small... mind numbingly small...

Yah its been bugging me.

Maybe try for 'Tanker' style boots which use a few straps instead of laces?

I agree with Mistress, That is what I do in most cases, sculpting laces is just an insanely hard task, even for a veteran sculptor. The tanker boots are what i would go for. The straps you can just cut out of greenstuff and apply them, much easier, and a good effect.

There's some super-fine wire or brass rod that you could get that would probably be easier that sculpting. Just bend it into shape and glue it down. I used some on a dread to make the outside look like circuitry.

Yah normally I would just go for the straps. But I am doing the 101st airborne. And their boots were kinda a status symbol for them.

If the are kind of like paratroopers, don't do the criss-cross, do them just in strips.
In WW2 they did that coz its easy to cut and get the boot off if the hurt there ankle or something.

Hoping to get a Grey Knights army going...

In that case use some boots off of a 1/35 scale airborne or infantry man of ww2. Try the dragon models they work the best. I have a few US infantry lying around somewhere. Tomorrow when i get home i will take a picture of the boot and a cadian and show the scale difference if you'd like.

That sounds great. I would really appreciate it! I hope to have the sculpting done tomorrow.

Why not put strips of green stuff and sort of stamp the center down, giving a raised ridge to either side. Let that dry a bit and cut out the center. Viola, laces.

use cotton applied with a bit of white glue, then coat will superglue once completely dry - it will set like rock!

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

Imperial Guard shoelaces so tiny. I guess green stuff is the best idea.

In ww2 a lot of paratroopers wore spats that gave them the distinctive peg-leg look. I think that more than the lace will give the 101st AB feel if you’re going for a ww2 look that is.

I did some fine detail stuff on an IG veteran squad and I found that Tamiya putty worked better for fine detail than did green stuff. I also used a set of dental tools, or picks, as they may be called. The Tamiya putty was a 2 part, just like green stuf, but was a sort of beige color, and it seemed to lend itself to fine detail work a bit better. I bought it from a local Hobby Town, but haven't had any luck finding it again. I also got the dental picks from there.

Well thanks for all the input guys. I went with just doing a cross hatch. It seems to have worked out pretty well.

I'll try to finish the second boot today and get some pictures. Again it is very small so I hope the pictures come out.

Why not just roll some Green Stuff nice and thin, lay it over and then trim it? It's super easy, super cheap, and takes practically no time.

Just because anyone agrees with anyone, doesn't mean they are correct. Beware the thin line between what is "Correct" and what is "Popular."
