Hi, I figured they're are smart people here, so I'll ask.
I need a program that will help me maximize my RAM usage. My friend told me he was using a program that basically "deflated" the extra RAM the system uses to run system programs. This sounds very appealing to me! I've got plenty of RAM, but it could be so much faster. Thanks!
My specs are:
HP mini 110 Netbook
1GB RAM
About 3 GB of empty hard drive space (It's only 15 Gigs to begin with...)
Intel Atom processor
Windows XP SP3
Help?

Don't bother with those RAM optimizing programs, their mostly garbage. Just uninstall the applications that drop crap processes in your background. Don't let things like AIM start when your PC boots. Defrag. RAM is SO CHEAP you have no reason not to buy a 2 GB stick.

DO NOT install iTunes, ReaplPlayer, Quicktime, WinAmp, ANYTHING from AOL, and start using Skype if you need an IM program. If they are ON your computer, get rid of them (CCleaner is good for this). Never use internet Exploder, only Chrome or Firefox (I prefer firefox).
Download this, and run it every week.
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download
use this for your mp3 player, and never look back. It is open source...will play ANY audio file.

Use this to play AAAALLLL of your videos. It is open source, as well..will play any video file.

Uninstall ANY antivirus on your computer. They all suck, especially McAffee. Disable Windows Security
install this trial...and SERIOUSLY spend the money on the full version.

last but not least, defrag your hard drive every month, or set it to do it itself nightly.
Macs Suck. Just had to add that.

Pretty much what IG_urban said, although defragging a HDD of that size more than once a year is a waste of time.
Go to Start -> Run -> type in "msconfig.exe" and hit enter. You can safely disable almost every program in the Startup tab, including iTunes, Quicktime, Java, Daemon Tools, Windows Live etc. Leave things like Pointer Drivers alone however. I was able to use my old ASUS Laptop for almost 5 years by stopping all non-essential services this way.
When you use the word 'deflated', it sounds like your friend was talking about increasing your virtual memory, which works in a similar fashion to RAM except it uses the HDD to store commands instead of the RAM. You can increase your VM space somewhere in the Performance and Maintenance section, however I'm not sure how much good it would do you - you'd probably just end up throttling your PC!

I'm using a pc from 2003 and have flooded it with gak for all those years, and it still works like a charm.
So I say gak is bogus.

Great answers. I loled when I had every program you said was bad installed! Aim,Itunes, quicktime and IE are all on there. I'm currently using AVG,which is pretty easy on the ram.
I'll definitely try those. Thanks!

what the feth are you talking about? Are you one of those, "I've never seen it happen, therefore it never does", "It's never happened to me, so therefore it doesn't happen", people?

No. Sell your iPod, because it's crap. Buy a Samsung or a Zune, you plug it in, and it opens like a thumb drive on your computer, and you drag the files in your music/video/pictures folders. No bullgak garbage proprietary software to feth up your computer with it's badly coded, resource-hungry, douchebaggery.

No I'm not, I've done ICT for a year I'm just saying, I've had the luck of never needing to hold myself to that.
And I prefer Philips MP3 players.
I use this:

Wow! I might have to look into that - I'm in the market for a new one since mine got fried by seawater, beer, sand and intense heat in Spain.
Model number?
