I was concerned about jump pack movement landing on terrain. there is nothing (unless I missed it) in the rule book that explains this. I played 2 veteran players at my local GW and two had different perspectives on this.

the first guy mentioned that I have to account for the number of inches I go up when I land on elevated terrain. For example, I am 6" away from a tower and the tower is 6" in height. I move the first 6" to get to tower and I complete the rest of my 6" by flying up. he said that I can completly fly over any buildings/terrain as long as i dont land on it, but if I do, i should account for the inches in height since I land there. Me, being a relatively new player, took the veterans word for it.

the next day, i played another veteran player. before I wanted to move my assault squad onto terran, i asked him if i had to account for the inches I elevate up. he told me no because they are jump packs and can move anywhere. What do you guys think?

You measure from where the base starts to where it finishes.

NOTHING states you only consisder the horizontal component when doing this. So you dont.

Now, most of the time the hypotenuse IS similar to the long side - when moving "up" onto woods which are 1/2" off the ground, for exsample.

If you notice page 93 (i tihink) which talks about movement in ruins it specifies you MUST measure the actual distance moved when landing on the upper floors. Y0ou DONT measure the 2 sides, but the diagonal movement you actually follow.

Movement in ruins is on p83 - measure start to end, at an angle if necessary. Jump Infantry can hop directly over ruins without penalty, i.e. lateral measurement with no height taken into account. Landing in or starting from ruins will require difficult terrain and the angled measurement.

How does one do a difficult terrain test for the 12" on jump infantry?

If you start or end your movement in difficult terrain you need to make a Dangerous Terrain test if you are using Jump Pack movement, but your movement distance is not slowed.

The second player has it right. The first need to reread the rulebook.

The across and up movement is for infantry in ruins that have been preagreed to have different levels etc.

Anyway, packs ignore difficult terrain when moving, taking dangerous terrain tests when starting or landing in it, as per ludovic.

this idea of measuring does lead to an interesting situation.

Say you are at the base of a large hill and the slant height up the hill to the top is 13 inches, but the base of the hill is less than 12 inches. By your idea of movement (and I guess in the rulebook) you are allowed to jump over the entire hill (less than 12 inches), but can't stop on top of the hill (13 inches). Seems a little silly.

Personally fella me and my brother who's an avid Blood Angel collector with many jumpackers in his army, play by this:

Aslong as it's within the 12" (say for instance a 3 floored building) it doesn't matter how high it is he can jump it, obviously taking a dangerous terrain test as normal.

It stops squabbles and adds to the story seeing 10 7ft" power-armoured killing machines fly up onto a rooftop..

Sounds pretty awesome to me.
