http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2010/03/georgias-senate-finally-passes-bill-requiring-seat-belts-in-pickup-trucks.html

After years of debate, the Georgia Senate finally approved legislation requiring the use of seat belts for people in pickup trucks.

Until now, the Peach State only required passengers in the front seats of cars, vans and SUVs to buckle up. The hold-up on the measure came from Georgia's rural legislators, who argue that wearing a seat belt is an inconvenience for farmers and farm workers who frequently hop in and out of their pickups as they tend the fields. They also say there is too little traffic on Georgia's backcountry farm roads to worry about the risk of colliding with another vehicle.

The new bill, which the Senate approved on a 45-2 vote, exempts off-road vehicles and pickups used for farming.

According to the Georgia Senate, more than two-thirds of pickup truck-related deaths resulted from passengers not wearing a seat belt in an accident. Requiring seat-belt use is expected to save $25 million in Medicaid costs over a 10-year period. Georgia also would become eligible for federal highway funding assistance that is being withheld until the seat-belt gap is closed.

And whilst you're pointing and shouting at the boogeyman in the corner, you're missing the burglar coming in through the window.

Hold the feth up. I cant ride in the back of a pickup anymore? Is that what:

Until now, the Peach State only required passengers in the front seats of cars, vans and SUVs to buckle up.

means? As in: after now everyone has to have a fething seatbelt. Thats some bs man. How am I gonna get back from my local county high school football game with two underage females when I am totally hammered drunk? Not like we can all fit in my buddy's pickup cab. See this is what happened when you pass health care and try to prevent cops from racially profiling mexicans, first its the pickups, next its the guns, then itll be our thoughts and confederate flags.

I've never understood how people get laws so screwed up.

Okay, I get that's it is impractical and annoying to require farmers hopping in and out of their pickups to wear seatbelts, and wouldn't help safety much when there's no-one else on the roads out there. But why would that mean exempting pickups? Wouldn't you just exempt people in rural areas working on their farms?

I mean, if you want a group of people to be exempted from a law, you exempt those people. You don't exempt a type of thing that loosely correlates with that group.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

That's why you drive pickups that were built before seatbelts were put in vehicles.

Can't make you wear one if it's not there.

They haven't yet nor would MN ever. For being a liberal state it's not all bad. They just need to do something about the welfare leeches and res rejects but that won't happen so long as we (everyone but I) keep voting for liberal governors.

In fact over a certain age you can get a collector plate. Insurance is cheaper, it's as legal as a modern car and you are totally immune to any traffic laws pertaining to equipment not installed in the vehicle in the factory.

You know what? People should be able to get a permit that allows them to not wear a seatbelt. Then the fees for it can go to pay off everyone who doesn't have one, and has to pay for liability insurance. Also, children can't get them.

What do you think Dakka? Yea or neigh?

I'd vote for Seb only under the condition he live in Mn for a period of no less than 12 months.

I think Presidents should be picked on who could survive a Mn winter with no outside help and just the bare necessities...you know? a kettle, some firewood, pork and beans, a tent, some gloves and a stocking cap.

If he survives a Mn winter he's President.

Actually, the pickups I've driven in the 40's and 50's weighed more than most modern pickups, built of steel on top of steel. Anything short of a tractor/trailer will careen off like a pinball.

Not to mention 50+ years ago they didn't deem it necessary to equip vehicles with seatbelts. Not as many cars on the road but still enough to possibly been a concern then.

Also nothing like shifting my way up through 6 gears of V8 International power, with a stylish body to boot, knowing that I have the power to pull everything, including a tractor/trailer (empty) out of a ditch or embankment.

Yes, they have. Any vehicle made after 1965 must have a safety belt if it is to be legal in Minnesota.

You survived so I'd probably vote for you.

You weren't originally from Oz though.

I'm also talking vehicles PRE-1965 Dogma. With the exception of a few good muscle cars (Mustang, Nova SS, Charger) most cars from 60's to 80's were gak.

My bro and I only collect pre-1960.

He had a '56 International 4x4 that drove like a tank, topped out slightly faster than a tank (55 downhill with a tail wind) but was made so durable that anytime he hit a deer it merely dinged the body.

Fair point, but what about a building?

Not to mention 50+ years ago they didn't deem it necessary to equip vehicles with seatbelts. Not as many cars on the road but still enough to possibly been a concern then.

People were more accepting of road deaths. Given how many less cars there were on the roads the road toll was horrendous.

Hmm. You not only know eelpout you caught one. Maybe you aren't such a bad guy afterall (or maybe I'm drunk to be saying that). LOL.

3 months ago I had the chance to buy a '72 Gran Torino (no, not the one from the movie). Shame I was jobless with gakky credit.

Nova's are excellent cars. My mom had a '73. Unfortunately it was gak brown in color but damn nice car. Though I only remember it being cool because I was like 6 at the time.

My dad used to pick me up from Jr. High in his 1970 DeVille. Exact same car as Boss Hoggs (from the tv series), minus the steer horns on the front.

I wish he would have hung onto it. I'd be rolling in style today.

Just might do that.

I normally hit up the Bemidji and Grand Rapids (MN, not Michigan) car shows.

I also like the Fast and Furious type cars so I usually hit up the Club Redline car show in the Fargodome every August. Some of those cars get me needing to whip out the lotion and spend time in the restroom. Know what I mean Vern?

Well, I like driving those classic trucks and cars.

If the man upstairs wants me at his side a seatbelt won't save me.

Plus it's just wrong from a nostalgic and aesthetic stance to add after market seatbelts to a vehicle never meant to have them.

I'm risking my life but damn if I won't be driving some of the hottest cars on the road.

That and I'm pretty sure a rope tied around my midsection and then wrapped around the seat does not a seatbelt make.
