I play tau, one of my buddies plays Chaos Marines affiliated with Nurgle. Last night, i destroyed his rhino with a squad of 3 broadsides, causing his marines to be forced to disembark. however, he said that i could not target them because they had disebarked that turn. I still had multiple shots left from that squad of broadsides, could i have fired on the marines? i was looking through the rules, and according to 5th edition you may assault the occupants of a transport you destroyed, as long as your unit is allowed to assault after shooting. However, nothing is mentioned about shooting them. any ideas? i checked google, and i guess no one has ever wondered if you are allowed to target the troops from a destroyed transport with that same squad.

Short answer: no.

Long answer: Page 16, main rulebook. A squad may only shoot at one target. And all shooting is resolved at a time so you won't have any shots left after taking out the transport anyway.

edit: a different squad could shoot those marines, ofc. Nothing protects them from another unit that hasn't yet taken it's shots. If your friend insists ask him to show you that rule from the book because I can't find it.

Shooting is resolved sequentially, unit by unit.

So if your unit of broadsides destroys a Rhino, all of their shots are considered to be happening at the same time. If they have a Target Lock, they can't have some of the Broadsides fire at the Rhino and some of the Broadsides in the SAME UNIT wait to fire at the contents. All targets must be designated before any are resolved.

However, fire from *separate units* is resolved in sequence. So if my squad A Wrecks a Rhino, forcing the squad to disembark, and then my squad B Explodes a Predator next to them, any marines caught in the blast radius may be wounded. Whereas if I blew up the Predator first, and the Marines were still in their Rhino at the time, they'd be safe from the explosion. Or if your Broadsides blew up the Rhino, your squad of Fire Warriors could THEN immediately take their normal shooting at the now-disembarked chaos marines.

It's right where you read.

P. 67 Above the white "Dedicated Transport" box.

You can't fire at them, with the same unit.

You cannot target the squad that came out as they were not a valid target upon THAT units declaration of firing. Comes up ALL THE TIME where I play.

This is easiest to solve by gathering up all the glances/pens at the end of a unit's shooting and rolling them together. Probably a more correct way to play anyway.

Q: How many of a specific demographic group are required to carry out a simple task?
A: An arbitrary number. One to carry out the task in question, and the remainder to act in a manner stereotypical of the group.

And potentially game-changing in many situations, too, since it could make the difference between an exploding and merely wrecked vehicle.

I'm assuming you were using Target Lock? If so you are actually supposed to declare all targets before your start firing, you can't pop shots till something goes boom then move on. When you declare it solves this issue because you can't declare your firing on a unit inside for a vehicle.

If you were using Target Lock then you need to roll everything at once or at least in chunks till you get how many glance/pens you get. You then roll those all at once.

Since all shooting from a unit is at the same time, you do need to keep rolling your damage dice, sure one might wreck it, say a shot in through the view port shredding the crew to marinara sauce. The other shot may hit the fuel tank sending the vehicle up in a burst of flame, and now crispy marinara sauce
