Deployment

Note here destroyers are way off on their own, heavy d's set to go down other table side. Also notice the sideways storm raven, used to get extra movement through pivoting.

Blood Angel's win the role and decide to go first. He deploys in a pretty standard line and decides not to combat squad anything. I take a few minutes to decide if i want to reserve everything or not. I decide to just put it all on the table and see what happens. I set up destroyers and heavy destroyers in cover but visible to the storm raven to see if he takes the bait and tries to alpha strike one of them instead of flat outing across the table (he doesn't fall for it, darn!). Destroyers and heavy destroyers are out on the wings, I have the lord and wraiths centrally located, tomb spyders behind the monolith and warriors fanning out.

Blood Angel's Turn #1: Storm Raven flat outs up the center (doing the sideways pivot to get some extra distance and stops in front of my monolith. Everything else jumps and runs. Death Company pod comes down near my warriors again.

Necrons Turn #1: Heavy Destroyers take down the storm raven on the first shot (big change from last time). I wasn't really expecting it and was really un-prepared for it. Wraiths, Lord, and a tomb spyder assault the death company, I only manage to kill 4 and end up locked. The other spyder moves up and blocks off a terminator assault on my warriors who are rapidly trying to move away. The monolith drops a round on an assault squad it deviates and he makes his cover saves from the sanguine shield (although he did roll double 1's again on the psychic check).

End of Necron Turn #1

Yay, we got the storm raven. Now what do we do with all the stuff that was inside? Notice all the stuff to the left of the storm raven.

Blood Angels Turn #2: The Blood Angels assault with a vengance. One assault squad jumps into btb with my lord and does 7 wounds, I fail 3 saves and the lord goes down. His terminators assault into the tomb spyder engaged with the death company. His lightning claw hits 3 times and wounds with all 3, then the dc with power weapon hits twice, rolls double 6's to kill off the spyder and scarab before they get to swing. The wraiths cause no damage and run off the table with a spectacular 17 inch fall back. The dc dread charges over the rave wreckage into the blocking tomb spyder, the spyder gets one pen but it only ends up being a stun, the spyder survives with one wound left. On the other side of the table the assault squad knocks down two of the destroyers who fail to get back up.

Necrons Turn #2: It's looking pretty grim but I'm determined to make a fight for it. The lord stands back up and in an attempt to keep the terminators from getting to my running warriors jumps over and charges into the sanguinary priest attatched to the terminators, he kills the priest and makes 4 invul's to stay in the combat. I suck a unit of warriors through the monolith to get them away from the nastiness that happened on the other side of the table and run the heavy destroyers up the side they shoot down 2 assault marines on their way. The dc dread kills off the spyder and consolidates towards the monolith. I dump 16 rapid fire shots and 3 destroyers into the assault squad with attatched priest and knock down 3 guys.

End of Necron Turn #2 left side

Now look to the left of the storm raven what necron things do you see there now? The assault squad jumps to the left for the destroyers and then spends the rest of the game baby sitting the objective next to the drop pod.

End of Necron Turn #2 right side

Oh that's where all the warriors went.

Blood Angels Turn #3: The librarian hops over kicks off his str10 attack power and tries for the monolith, but fails to pen. The dc charge into the lord combat and roll a 6 to wound with their one guy with a power weapon, and down goes the lord again. The dc dread kicks the monolith. The other assault squad jumps over and finish's off my heavy destroyers. The assault squad that was going to go after my destroys jumps back and shoots and assaults my unit that I sucked through the lith. After shooting power weapon attacks and the kitchen sink I have 3 necrons left in the combat. I left one in base bo base with the priest, he hit's, wounds, and my opponent fails his save, down goes the priest. Then the fist goes 3 hits, 2 wounds, I have one necron left standing. I was down by 4 on the resolution test, and roll a 6, my single necron warrior holds!

Yeah that's right who's the man? The man is that lone necron buried in the sea of red.

Necrons Turn #3: The lord stands back up and is put into combat with both of the dc. He fails to wound the dc, but they do no damage back. I suck the single warrior through the lith and 3 of his friends join him. Without the priest there I'm able to get some wounds through and I knock the squad down to a fist, melta gun, and 2 regular guys. The monolith fires off it's flux arc's and just goes haywire. The flux arc gets 3 hits on the dc dread and immobilizes it. I then get one wound through on the librarian and he fails the save.

End of Necron Turn #3

Blood Angels Turn #4: The terminators assault the lord. His large assault squad jumps towards an objective. The smaller squad assaults into my 4 man necron squad, killing 2, but I pass my morale on an 8. The lord downs 2 of the terminators before going down again.

Necrons Turn #4: I suck the 2 warriors through the monolith. 12 Warriors, the flux arc, and 3 destroyers finally manage to kill off the one assault squad.

Blood Angels Turn #5: He's holding the one objective and he can't really move off of it with his assault squad. The terminators get a rather poor difficult terrain role and decide not to tempt fate and go over the storm raven wreckage.

Necrons Turn #5: I move and run the 2 man squad onto the far objective. I then move the destroyers up so that if there is a turn 6 I can boost across to take away his scoring objective. The destroyers and large warrior squad open up on the terminators but don't kill any. The monolith drops a pie plate on the assault squad. I get 6 wounds and he goes to ground saving all but 1 or 2.

I think his finger is pointing to the man! Or he was saying those guys should have been dead! We'll be back I tell you.

I roll a 2 and the game ends. 1 objective each for a tie. Whew that was rough. Losing the lord both spyders and the wraiths right off the get go was scary. I owe it all to that little necron warrior that popped the sanguinary priest and held, that and the monolith killing the librarian, immobilizing the dreadnaught and sucking the warriors out of hand to hand. That was a crazy game it went from a necron massacre to the blood angel's fending off a loss in one turn.

Wow, I thought it would be very hard to even squeeze a draw out of this battle, but as always, your necrons surprise me. A nicely fought battle against such a mobile foe!

Wow that was a great review, it had me on the edge of my seat my turn 3, I was cheering for the necrons, well done as well to get a draw and almost a win.

Special mention has to go to the lord for getting up 2 twice

$%^%$# Lord. Thing wouldn;t stay dead!

A couple of notes from the BA side:

1. I love the Death Company Dreadnuaght with blood talons. I can't put it into words why, but I do. It may be my armies biggest achilles heal but I think I am going to stay with it. The 5 attacks on the charge at str 7, ignoring shaken and stunned, and fleet coming out of a storm raven is just too cool. The only issue i have is rage. Stuck against a monolith he ends up just standing there and doing nothing all game long. The open question I have is so long as I end my movement 1 inch away from the monolith can I slide around it. We have been playing it so that I cannot and so each game the dc dread has ended up in combat with the monolith while it just laughs at him in that annoying metalic way.
2. Thunderhammer storm shield termies with feel no pain are very very tough. I like them and I think I am going to keep them.
3. The storm Raven is nearly as durable as my wave serpants but throws out amazing firepower. And as a pure delivery mechanism worth every point. I am considering running some games with a deep striking land raider but the storm raven owns my heart for now.
4. I am liking the sanguine sword more than the blood lance these days. I am finding i have enough melta to take down most opponents and the ability to get some str 10 into my army is much needed.
5. For those of you that keep thinking I am an idiot for letting those tomb spiders charge me I would say watch his movement very carefully. What he does is moves the tomb spider up 6", deploys a 2" base of scarabs and then charges 6 inches. Giving him a grand total of a 14" charge range which he has been consistently making by a 1/2 an inch or so. I didn't catch on until he told me about it after the 4th time he did it. Keep your eye on those tricky necron players.
6. I really do not have a great answer to Necrons at 1500 in this build as I cannot crack the monolith on a consistent basis. I believe that I have the secret now to his army though and I expect that if a 3rd game is had the Blood Angel's will be victorius. Basically, I need to reverse my attack strategy and use the dreadnuaght and terminators to go after his troops and the jump pack guys to go after his destroyers and such. Kill the lord and the tomb spiders and you eliminate his mane ways of doing damage. Do not underestimate that lord the thing is brutal (though expensive).

As always a great game, well fought to the end, though I seriously dispute the fact that I was playing for a tie at the end. If he hadn;t gotten a little lucky and cuased 6 wounds with that last shot from the monolyth I had a plan for going for the win. I had the tie sewn up. I was going to use the terminators to crack that last squad of destroyers and string the last assualt squad across and grab two objectives with the one squad.

I am with Legion91, these reports are great and it really makes me want to give Necrons a try. As a side note I really like the Bronze armor, really makes the army standout

The extra assault movement that it generate's, the ability to run, and the majority toughness rules really helps make the tomb spyders a viable unit to take. Just don't ever pop out more than one scarab!

I still don't think you can control an objective when you go to ground, I just haven't found a rule to back me up on it yet. And you can dispute all you want but I wrote the battle report so you were playing for the tie .

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Thanks everyone for the kind words. My original goal for doing the necrons was kind of mutli-purpose

1. No one is playing them locally and a lot of the newer players had never seen them played.

2. I've had the majority of the model's since they released the codex, most of them put together and base-coated, but none of it painted. So I also wanted to show how with a little perseverence you can have a table top painted army in next to no time, that, while it won't win any painting awards looks nice.

3. I always like a challenge and the necrons are certainly giving me one. They don't fare so bad at 1500 but I think they are going to get harder to win with as points go up. Luckily they just started a 6 week league and set it at 1500pts . There are just some things I haven't figured out yet. Like how to stop Mephiston. Talk about giving an army nightmares.
