Silly question probably, but...

If i have a long fang squad, which splits its fire on say a Leman russ and a Chimera, who am i supposed to assault? Can i simply choose? (for the purposes of this question, Logan Grimnar IS in the unit and giving them relentless USR, hence the move and shoot the HW's )

You can choose, since both units are the unit the unit shot at, which means the unit can legally assault either unit.

It's how I roll my Logan. Droppod + heavy bolter long fangs + assault cannon terminator. Results may vary, awesomeness assured.

Another good synergy is Logan, Pod, Missile Launcher LFs, and a CML Terminator. Seven mobile crack/frag missile shots per turn.

Remember that the Squad Leader has to be alive and can't shoot in the turn that the Long Fangs use Fire Control.

I'm not sure you can actually assault when you split fire. The trick is this, the BRB (p.33) reads that "[the assaulting unit] cannot assault a different unit to [sic] the one it previously shot at." Now, here's the way it would work: you shot units A and B. You want to assault unit A. Your opponent asks "did you shoot at unit B?" You answer "yes" and since unit A is "a different unit" you cannot legally assault it.

For the record, though, that interpretation sucks like a black hole. In any game I were playing outside of a tournament I would just say sure assault whoever you want.

you don't fire one then the other you fire at both units at the same time. Pick who your going to assault.

I think Gwar!'s interpretation is the best, as far as RAI goes. Anyone who says you can't because you ALSO fired at another unit deserves the punch in the face they would receive.

Frankly, the whole "can only assault who you shoot" is a dumb restriction and creates more problems than it solves.

Here's a situation I'm not sure about:

Assault Squad A shoots at a chimera and fails to bust it open.

Devastator Squad B then shoots it and explodes it.

Can Assault Squad A assault the veterans that spill out?

I prefer Drop Pod + 6 Long Fangs with Multi-Meltas and Relentless on the turn they drop in.

The answer is No. Squad A shot at the Chimera, so the Chimera is the only unit against which they can declare an assault.

The rules allow the (singular) unit that shot and and subsequently destroyed the vehicle to assault the unit that bails out of it. Anybody else who shot at the vehicle is out of luck.

It's a fairly freqently discussed issue... if you want to see more of a break down of why it works that way, do a bit of a trawl back through the forums and you should turn up multiple discussions on it.
