In my 2500 ard boyz I am having trouble picking between either 2 thunderfire cannons or 2 vindicators. I understand what each does, but in such a large point game, are vindicators just begging to be popped before they can get in range to drop that wonderful large blast marker? Or does the range and versatility of the tfc outweigh the lower strength/ap?Any thoughts?

Mind if we see the rest of your list? Both provide options the other can't handle. If we see the list we can see where it is lacking and suggest from there.

Duh, an army list would definately help wouldn't it.
Vulkan
Librarian w/ nullzone and avenger
8 assault termies (5 th/ss 3 lc) in a LRC as a designated transport
5 assault termies w/ th/ss in a LRR taking a hvy slot
3 tactical squads in dozer rhinos
2 2 Land speeder squadrons
And either 2 vindi's or tfc's.......or 1 of each? I have always been of the thought take them in pairs, but what do I know. Lol

I run a semi-similar list (minus a LR/Hammernator squad). You are suffering from a lack of ranged anti-tank big time. Personally, I use 2 vindicators in this case. Yes they suffer from the "1 weapon destroy = cry" disease, but it fits with the close fire-fighting style of Salamanders and fills the "ranged anti-tank" slot somewhat.
Your Hammernators will have no problem going through both infantry or vehicles, so it comes down to what you have your tacticals equipped with. If they have meltas, the tfc might be a good choice to shoot at guys falling out of transports. If they have flamers, vindicators would be good to pop tanks first with as you advance. Notice I said only "when you advance" for firing those pie plates near your 'ready to assault' termies is kind of a bad idea.
If you have the option AC/LC sponson predators are similar points and less risky than vindicators.
You're right it is better to run pairs of whatever you choose than just one of each. That way if you lose one you still have the ability to perform that role (anti-infantry or tank) with another model.

The tactical squads do in fact come with mm's and flamers.

some shooty Dreads might be worth considering to, either with 2 ac or an AC and a PC.
Although you do have alot of antiarmor in the form of thunder hammers, so the anti infantry abilities of the thunderfire cannons may come in handy. It also has the added benefit of giving you 2 bolster defenses and two techmarines with servo harness should the guns be destryoed.

i did contemplate the dread idea, like maybe a pair of vanilla dreads or kinda on the odd side for my low ranged army, a pair of ironclads. But I have never hadx much success with dreads. Mine have an uncanny ability to become los blocking terrain

My list used drop podded ironclads and they have never dissapointed me. They unleash a world of hurt the turn they come in (I use the 2 TL HF version) and distract your opponent long enough to get your Land Raiders into position.

If you need to save points and still want to go with the ironclads, dont forget they come with smoke. You can move them 6 inches, pop smoke and have a 4+ cover save even in the middle of an open field.
I prefer normal dreads over tanks. They are more mobile and in most cases can move and bring more heavy weapons to bear than a tank.
However, I absolutly love thunderfire cannons. With the group I play with my opponentants have come to fear it. However if I dont go first, i usally dont get to fire the thing as it has been destroyed. The way I look at it though, its a 25 point "upgrade" to a techmarine with a servo harness that just to some pretty massed fire to destroy because I put it in a building or behind a wall and gave it either a 2+ or a 3+ cover save useing the techmarines, bolster defenses. Ironclads can't take twinlinked heavy flamers, just normal heavy flamers but you can take two of them. I've had better luck just replaceing the stormbolter with a heavy flamer and leaving the melta. Nothing says nice to meet you like a heavy flamer and a melta followed by an AV13 Seismic Hammer assult of doom.

Poor choice of wording on my part. I give them two HFs and Vulkan makes them TL. Amazing for cooking a squad not in a transport.
