Who are the guys in the bottomish left "tending" to the plague marine and what the heck are they doing.

I thought they were admiring it or something then I realized they just had masks on with goofy expressions.

And why does the face of the lad prominently featured in the middle look like Ghazghkull's battle wagon rolled over it a couple of times?

Well the whole thing is weird. Every figure in that cover is off in some way.

IMO the cover art for the new BA codex is almost as bad as the fluff in said codex.

I think the "off-ness" on the cover has nothing to do with the fluff and simply to make it look more "Arty".

BA artwork has always looked less realistic then the other artwork they have for other races.

it is almost iconoclastic, little depth, flat feeling and idealistic. it almost looks like some of the Fantesy artwork.

Codex space marines is very Grimdark.

The figures in the botem corner are chapter serfs, mortals who serve the chapter as battle ship crew and servants.

no idea what the are doing to the Plague marine. Maybe they record every traitor marine the chapter slays in revenge for the heresy?

Well considering their last release was a pdf, I'd say this is a step up even if the artwork looks like baals (tee hee)...

The Space Wolves cover being an exception to that Imo.

But Beastmen, Tyranids, Blood Angles and IG are quite bad. Skaven is alright I guess, though not great.

Agreed. I posses several art degrees and I will admit, my financial wellbeing has required a foray into web development and graphic design and a severe atrophy of my traditional skills but I know of numerous artists whose worst work would make the codex cover art look like a child’s finger painting. I wonder how my friends trapped in menial jobs with art skills that rival Da’Vinci (not exaggerating) and yet garbage like the codex cover art of late meets world-wide publication.

What did you think of the Black Templars Codex?

I thought the cover art was cool and enyoy reading the fluff.
Realise this a slightly dated question, I'm playing a lot of catch up!

I might not have an art degree, but I always found the positioning of the artwork as awkward. It's always a group positoined on a strange hillock shooting at enemies two feet away, with strange poses to make this work. At least the Tau cover has some dynamism, as they are advancing. I do like the Black Templars cover.

As for those servitors tending to the plague marine, perhaps they are attempting to remove any residual chaos taint. I like the idea that they are cateloguing each traitor that they kill.
