I am trying to learn the game with my 2 sons and had a couple of questions and want to be sure we are playing it right.

1. I understand you can shoot through friendly units. What about if you have a skirmish line of enemy units and another enemy unit behind it. Can you shoot at the unit behind.

For example, A (Friendly unit), E1 (Enemy unit 1), E2 (Enemy Unit 2)
Can you do A ------> E1 -----> E2

Can A shoot at E2 in that case assuming there are gaps in the figures to shoot through?

2. Can you confirm you either get a cover save OR an Armor save but not both at the same time correct?

I know these are probably pretty basic but just want to be sure.

1: Yes, A can indeed fire on E2. E2 will get a cover save, because of intervening models. Think of it as E1 being in the way spoiling A's chances of hitting their intended target.

2: You can have both an armour save and a cover save at the same time, but you may only USE one of them.

For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.

1) Yes you can, but the E2 will get a cover save.

2) Correct. You only ever take a single save. You always take the best save. For example, a Model has a 3+ Armour save, a 4+ Cover save and a 5+ Invulnerable save. If he is hit by, say, a Regular AP5 weapon, he gets to make his armour save. If he was hit by an AP3 Weapon, he would take his cover save. If he was hit by an AP3 Weapon that ALSO ignored cover saves (like a Flamestorm Cannon), then he would take his invulnerable save.

On another note, welcome to Dakka and to 40k. May The Empra have mercy on your Soul!
