I was thinking about a Salamanders Vulkan Melta Spam list to use in my next local tourney. The tourney is 1750 pts and this is what I came up with.
C & C welcome.

Forgefather Vulkan He’stan = 190 pts

Tactical squad: 10 Marines, meltagun, multimelta = 175 pts
Rhino: hunter-killer = 45 pts

Tactical squad: 10 Marines, meltagun, multimelta = 175 pts
Rhino: hunter-killer = 45 pts

Tactical squad: 10 Marines, meltagun, multimelta = 175 pts
Rhino = 35 pts

Assault Terminator squad: 5 Terminators (5TH/SS) = 200 pts
(dedicated Transport) Land Raider Redeemer: multimelta = 250 pts

Land Speeder Tornado: HF/MM = 70 pts

Land Speeder Tornado: HF/MM = 70 pts

Land Speeder Tornado: HF/MM = 70 pts

Vindicator: siege shield = 125 pts

Vindicator: siege shield = 125 pts


I'm not entirely sure how this would work, so if you have any ideas, feel free to say.

My only fear would be against a horde army. You aren't exactly set up for taking down gobs of troops. A armor/tank heavy army will hate you and really suffer if they can't stop your Rhino charge. The Termie's will be pretty good in CC, but may get swamped before they can fight their way through it.

That being said, I bet that would be a blast to play. Tell us how it goes.

As someone who plays Vulkan a lot, I would use a LR Crusader versus a Redeemer. While the redeemer is definitely a Salamander vehicle, its rules suck. You can really only fire 2 weapons at once if you move, and even if you don't move the enemy would have to surround your LR for the flamestorms to work well.

IM you're better with a crusader, MM, and extra armor. Put Vulkan in there with the termies and you have a REALLY mean fighting force that can move in and kill almost any HQ or MC with ease.

Other than that, not a bad list. You will have a hard time with horde armies, but if you keep those Vindicators firing at all times you should be ok.

I wasn't sure about the LR, i was thinking about taking a godhammer and changeing a few of the Tactical squads to flamers but a Crusader has always appealed to me.

Do you think i should swap some meltaguns out for flamers or keep things the same.

What should I drop to fit in the Crusader, drop one of the Land Speeders or something.

Keep the crusader, I'd drop the hunter-killers on the rhinos to fit it in, I don't think you've much use for them anyway.

The Rhino's Hunter-killer are there for an Alpha Strike or if there is an oppourtunist shot.

I would drop the H/K missiles and the siege shields and get some combi-weapons on your Sergeants. A one shot flamer or meltagun would be better than a single shot Krak missile in a Vulcan list.

The only thing I would change is taking AC/LC Predators instead of the Vindicators, and switching the Multi-Meltas in your Tactical Squads for Missile Launchers. That way you have a much better chance at taking out light transports, and have the option of sitting back and shooting when you come up against a more CC oriented army than yours.

I've heard that AC/LC preds arent very good, what is the general opinion on them.If i change them i only really save 10 pts, and thats 10 points that i dont know where to put.

If anyone has any ideas about what to do with the 10 points and whether AC/LC preds are good, please express your opinion.

AC/LC predators are wonderful at cracking light armor and still have the punch to have a shot against even a monolith if called into such a roll. The score on average 3 hits per round of shooting each gun and has a roughly 50/50 chance of doing meaningful damage to Av12 each turn. I wouldn't say they're the best at the role, but they are the best in the SM codex aside from x2 AC Dreads which serve much the same function for 5 more points.

AC/LC preds are great transport poppers.

I like unbelivers suggestions, I think that I would change one squad into a flamer squad as well, your crowd controll is not the best. This is also a reason for taking the MLs, three frag missiles can do a decent amount of damage to a horde.

Why don't you try to fit in a command squad with 5 flamers and/or meltaguns and/or thunder hammer(s) mounted in a razorback with heavy flamer. Seems like a good anti-horde/vehicle squad to me ^^. Personally i think the redeemer is better, bolters don't do that much, wow 3 twin bolter shots (6 if you get in range), just move foreward and you kill a lot more (75% of warhammer has a 3+ save anyway...)!

i can give you an awesome addition to this army if you ever want to expand it which looks a little like this;

10 sternguard, 4 combi meltas, 4 combi flamers, 2 heavyflamers mounted in a drop pod 345pts

drop in behind the enemy combat squad it up 4 flamers and a heavy and then 4 meltas and another heavy flamer they pretty much melt everything they touch and with hestan theyll do it even better (obviously you know the deal the flamer squad goes after infantry and the meltas tanks).

the only downside is the 4 flamers/meltas are 1 shot only but you still have the 2 heavys and even after that there sternguard so you have a shedload of special ammo.

its a bit beardy and expensive but its such a great way to start your shooting phase on your first turn (the look on the enemys face will be priceless)

This leaves me with 25 pts laying around. I had the Vindies in there originally for the large blast template for taking out any huge squad that is running at me, eg 30 Boy Ork squad etc, and with the preds i can take out two transports per turn. which is more effective is now the question.

With the ML in the Tactical squads, i have less MM, which greatly benefit from having Vulkan. Should i have one flamer/ML squad or two like i have above.

I think that you might want to try something along this route:

1) Tac squads with flamer/MM. Reason: SM are the kings of midfield, and Vulkan ones do that better than any others. You are not sitting those Rhinos back, they are in your opponents face messing up their business.

2) Get a third Landspeeder in there. You can either drop the combis and HKs to do this or tool down the Predators. Reason: Fast objective contesting and those quick MM or HF shots are very nice. You can bring them up fast to take out Landraiders, or just deep strike them in late game for objectives.

3) Optional: 85 points = An AC/HB Predator. With all of your Meltas and your Terminators, I question the need for those Lascannons. Plus, you are kind of short in ways to deal with troops once you pop those transports. Another option could be Vindicators (If they lose their weapons, they make great ram vehicles).

I originally had vindies but i got scorched, so i replaced them with the preds.

Should i take my original list, but drop the hunter killers and add extra armour to my LRC, coz we have just gone around in a great big circle.

That's one of the problems with posting lists on the net, everyone has a different idea what makes a good list. In my experience, vindicators are very hit and miss. One week the shine, taking of double, even triple their points, other weeks, they lose their guns turn one and charge round the board as moving cover.

I think the sternguard suggestion was really interesting.

Maybe like 2

7 sternguards /w 3 combi-melta ,2 combi-flamers in drop pod

and try to put a tact squad in another pod to have a total of 3.

I like the list. I would play with it and see. I think big horde armys like orks might give you fits but other marine armys and eldar and such should be very competative. But honestly everyone struggels against orks now a days.

Stern guard would be pretty killer. you would have to jack with your speeders for em and honestly I would bring those heavy flamers rolling in.

I like Vindies perasonally, so i took them instead of AC/LC preds or three AC/HB preds.

Is there anything else i should add or would this list surfice for my up coming tourny?

Here is a 1750 list I like to run.

Vulkan

1x10man tac squads with flamer/mm in rhino
2x10man tac squads with melta/mm in rhino

1x7man assault termie squad w/th/ss in lrc w/mm/extra armor

2 preds w/ac/las sponsons

2 land speeders w/mm/hf

1750 exactly.

If you are going to make a death star unit with the th/ss termies, I suggest making a death star unit.

I like ac/las sponson preds as they give vulkan lists some long range anti-tank that it lacks.

If you don't like taking the speeders, you could replace them with a mm dread in a pod.

i think this will be pretty awesome at a tourny
the speeders are cool and i think they will realy annoy your opponents the tacticals are nice and evenly loaded out and the vindicators will add a nice kick.

the thing i like most is it seems well themed and im personally all for themed armys
i can picture Mr. hestan rolling into battle with this list

Yeah thanks mate. I like how GW have made it that if you stick to a theme of an army it can be effective. eg, Pedro with Sternguard or Vulkan with melta and flamers.

The last list you posted was very close to mine. A couple less termies and vindi's instead of ac/las preds. Your list is fine. The differences is simply taste and what works better for you. Go with what works for you.

Judging from your posts, I think you will be just fine. Someone that listens to constructive criticism like you do and apparently play tests like you do should be alright.

I proxied the vindies and i am looking forward to the weekend, when i will play against a friend of mine, and proxy the preds and seee how they go.
