quick question:

my bugs, genestealers mostly, have been struck with a plague that effects joint strength apparently, every 2 or 3 games I lose a genestealer or two to a broken ankle.

what do people do (if anything) to reinforce "rickity" models like this?

Strange.. o-o

Maybe try greenstuffing around the ankles to make them thicker? I've had joint problems, but only because I accidentally left a few models in the nail polish remover too long and they got soft.

Another option is to take one of the hobby hand drills and go into the model from below. Either through the base or through the feet itself and drill into the model so that it passes through the joint that keeps failing. Then take a piece of wire or a paperclip and super glue it inside the model like that. This can be pretty tricky depending on the model but if you have some where you can get a decent angle and safely drill into the leg then it will hold exceptionally well. If that isn't an option then greenstuffing to thicken up the ankles isn't a bad idea. For the ones that break and have to be repaired it is worth it to pin them in a method similar to the one I already mentioned, just to ensure they don't break again.

I just hate 'running' models posed on one leg - weak ankle sydrome is very common. The only real solution in most cases is to artifically create a second point of contact to the base, either giving the second foot something to stand on or a piece of rubble which can conveniently touch some other part of the model's body.

Gah - I have the same problem with Tau Battlesuits. The only real way to solve this is pinning - get a pin vice and drill a small hole in the foot and a small hole in the ankle, then use a bit of stiff wire to reinforce the join.

Paperclips are the cheapest and easiest source of incredibly stiff wire, and are about the right thickness

My genestealers have all been ok but I have a problem with hormagaunts.. there's that one pose where it's leaping and just the tip of one hoof is attached to the slotta that goes into the slotta base. All of my models like that have broken off and the only way I've been able to fix it to stay is with super glue & zip kicker.

Pinning weak ankles sounds like a good idea, never thought of that.

I have never witnessed a genestealer break but the obvious answer is pinning but if you don't want to go through the hassle of pinning do this
