Hey all.

I've picked up the Khador book because I prefer the Khador models over the other factions. That said, I'm at a bit of a loss over what to get to start building a playable force.

So far I have a Manhunter and a box of Widowmakers - where should I go from here?

Well if you can find a battle box somwhere they offer decent value for the money. After that the first thing you need to decide is what kind of army you want to play, do you want to play with lot's of jacks or would you rather go with a mixed force. This will help you decide which warcaster you want to use. Khador can be played many different ways and be competative, but it can also be a very expensive faction to buy so try to keep this in mind when you decide how you want to build your army.

Thanks for the reply!

I'm hoping to run a mixed force. Although I like the Khadorian 'Jack aesthetic, I quite like a lot of the infantry models as well, and I'm more interested in creating an army around the models I like rather than try and force something.

With regards to the battle box, I'm not thrilled with the Sorcha model, and I'm hoping to hold out until the new battle boxes are released. From what I gather, though, there is no ETA.

How strong is a Kodiak to start? As far as the 'Jack's go, the Kodiak's are my favorite, appreance-wise.

Would the following list be decent? I realise it doesn't include a warcaster, but I haven't settled on who to play yet.

Kodiak
Widowmakers
Great Bears of Gallowswood
Manhunter
War Dog

Kodiak is a good jack, two power 16's is pretty solid, you also have the greatbears for busting armor. Seem's like a decent all around list, now you just have to pick which warcaster helps that army the most. I would take a look at the butcher maybe, he has a solid spell list and his feat is great for all your melee troops. Greatbears and your manhunter with 5 dice damage on charge attacks during your feat turn are really scary, just the manhunter alone is a big threat to many casters during the butchers feat. Good luck and enjoy.

Great bears are still a very solid unit in MK II. Also the Widowmakers and Manhunters are used in a great many viable lists. There is nothing wrong with any of these models. The Wardog is much more useful with some casters over others but I'd say only a few couldn't make use of him.

I've not faced a great many Kodiaks in MK II yet. So I'm afraid I'm not a good judge on him. A good buy would be to pick up and magnitize the plastic kit. It's really not that hard to do and with Khador it gives your four different jack options.

If you can give us a list of all the models you prefer it might help us steer you toward a caster or casters to start out with.

What's your typical play style as well... that also can help give us an idea for a direction. Solid beat face, glass cannon, attrition, ect. Khador has a potential to play so many different ways that it can really surprise you.

Thanks for the replies

First off, the casters I like the looks of:

The new Sorscha (pSorscha, who hasn't been released yet)
Strakhov
pIrusk
pButcher

Units:
Battle Mechanics
Greylords Ternion
Kayazy Assassins
Kayazy Underboss
Kossite Woodsmen
Kovnik Markhov
Kholdun Lord
Winterguard Rifle Corps
Widowmaker Marksman

'Jacks:
Juggernaut
Drago
Beast '09
Devastator

The stuff I listed above are also models I like.

Ideally, I would like to make a list that definately includes the Kodiak, Widowmakers, and Manhunter, and I'm looking to start out at ~15 points, with an eye to expand to 25.

I'm looking to paint the models before fielding them, so I'm not really looking to collect extra models yet.

Thanks again for the input!

*edit - reading skills for the win. I tend to prefer a balanced attack - so a mix of ranged support and close combat. I like my armies to be as flexible as possible, and I tend to avoid armies that specialize in one facet.

Any of the four can be good mixed threat casters. The Butcher favors melee but range can be just as killer on his feat turn as melee attacks.

Using Butcher as your starting point and including your target starting point models gives us 7 points left to spend at the 15 point level (15 points +6 from Butcher's Jack points). I've seen some evil list that use Kayazy with him... so I'd probably add the min unit and the under boss to fill out your 15 point list. You don't have a lot of shooting to say the least going this direction though and your running jack light. So your main goal would be to roll in and try and go for the Warcaster or Warlock. If you wanted to give yourself more range you could go with a Min unit of the Rifle corp and Kovnik Jozef. If your running any kind of Winterguard unit he's hella good.

That would however shift you to a more shooty force. At 15 points it's hard not to be heavy one direction or the other.

At 25 points... well that would depend on if your planning on strictly growing from your 15 point list or if you planning on diversifying a little.

Also keep in mind that picking up two warcasters (or more) allows for you to paint up a single model and make an army play in a completely different direction.

if you take the Kodiak Widowmakers and manhunter you might want to look at Zerkova. The model's not really that bad and she plays differently than the other casters.
of the ones you've said you like all would work well. Strakhov is pretty solid with infantry heavy lists, I've been running him with Iron Fang Pikemen, winterguard rifle corp and assault kommandos along with a Destroyer and Kodiak and like how that works.
I have a soft spot in my heart for the Butcher as he was the caster that helped me understand the game back in MkI. The new Butcher sculpt is also a great fig.
