Or, virus missile, in that case. Seems like a quick fix to rot the things from the inside out, and destroy the hive mind- one piece of the collective whole at a time....

Smaller Tyranid space entities intercept the missiles en route, sacrificing themselves for the whole. The larger organisms then om nom nom through the Imperial fleet.

Pretty much this.

Nids aren't stupid, I am sure they could tell that a Virus Bomb was heading their way. Not only that, but as soon as they noticed a section of the "hull" is rotting away, they would just cut it out before it spreads, then regrow.

Virus bombs dont come cheap, and need oxygen to survive, space having none, and what oxygen is in the ships section the missile hit will start to vacate into space because of..the hole made by the missile.

Death comes for you.

I recall something in the BFG Armada book stating that they had a tendency to adapt the virus to their own ends, making the intended target a carrier for the virus that could potentially infect the initial wielders of the weapon with the very plague they had intended to kill their foes with.

Viruses don't need oxygen.

A better question is why the Tyranids don't just drop viruses on a planet which cause all live to liquify. It would save all the hassle with the flamethrowers and so on.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

I know the joke, but you literally copied and pasted the exact quote, word for word, that Grey Templar used in this thread:

Tyranid ships are probably best killed what kills everything else in space, too - huge frigging lance batteries and nova cannons.

If BL books are taken as a reliable source for fluff: In "Cadian Blood", a single cruiser-class vessel with one of these gargantuan nova cannons - being a small ship itself - almost destroyed the Terminus Est, the fething flagship of the Death Guard Chaos Space Marines with Typhus on board, by itself. That's a gun that just blows huge chunks of matter into energy and out of reality.

Try to assimilate this! BLAM

It's true that viruses do not require oxygen, they only require a host to replicate. What you might be thinking of is the firebombing that takes place after a virus bomb has been dropped - which would require oxygen.

Using the virus bomb on ships has to have been thought of, implemented, and found wanting. Even if you nailed a huge nid ship, and that's a big if given the swarm, once it hits there is no guarantee it affects tyranids in a similar fashion to life from this galaxy. Tyranids are pan-galactic, its hard to believe a virus designed to feed on life encountered in this galaxy would be perfect for destroying all life in the universe.

Also, there's an easier way to destroy a Hive Fleet.

Lure them to a planet nicely full of life orbiting a Red Giant.

Cause the star to go nova (or supernova if it's big enough) while it's still munching.
No more Hive Fleet. Job's a good 'un...

These are the Hive fleets, taken from the Eldar codex. They are, combined, roughly somewhere around 1/5th the size of the entire galaxy, and the fluff hints that those are just the first probing limbs of a much larger body. I hope you have a lot of virus bombs and nova cannons!

Even if the Imperium had the Technology to make a star go nova (I don't think they do), and said technology was common enough to allow it to be destroyed (which it will), the fact that you can make a star go nova kind of makes the need for it to be a Red Giant Moot

All you really need would a be some space marines, heck not even that maybe some marine scouts, to board a bio space ship, hunt down a important organ or 2 and then escape.

If only there was some way to play this out on the table top...

On a more serious point though virus's are biomatter they would assimilate and just make it more potent even if it took a fleet arm/tenticle to do it

far too many points and still painting...

They don't (AFAIK), but given a genius being born somewhere, with the tech they have available it's not inconceivable that such a weapon is developed (course, for it to be accepted in the advance-ophobic Imperium of Man is another matter entirely). Eldar supposedly do (or did) possess the technology. If they did, the knowledge is likely to already exist somewhere (the Black Library?), and while they wouldn't share the knowledge with humanity (its scope is just too mindbogglingly powerful for us poor mon-keigh), the scheme in its subtlety could easily be Eldar-conceived and executed. Necrontyr, by all accounts, are quite knowledgable about stars as well (as are the C'Tan).

I picked a red giant because it's conceivable that, being on the verge of going nova already it only requires a little push as opposed to a huge one that may not be feasible.
Also, if the Tyranid Hive Mind is intelligent (a reasonable assumption), a red giant (or two) going nova as a hive fleet happens to be nearby is not as suspicious as, say, a yellow dwarf doing the same. It might get suspicious if it starts happening to each new Hive Fleet going into the Galaxy, but after losing an X amount of Hive Fleets before adapting it may already be too late, or it may just decide that we're too much of a liability/too dangerous a prey to eat.
And if the Nids have as many hive fleets as there are stars in the galaxy then we may as well roll over and die, cause there's nothing we can do except try to hide.

I have discussed this with some friends and we came up with the following

a) Virus Bombs are rare. The technique to develop the life-eater Virus is a closely guarded secret known on only 1 known Mechanicus world. Thisis why Cyclone inferno missiles and lance batteries are used in Exterminatus more often then Virus Bombs.

b) The Tyranids will simply adapt to virus bombs

c) If BL is anything to go by the virus can actually be minipulated by a third party (eg in the book Planetkill a High Magos Biologus rewrote the Life Eater to turn an Imperial planet into a world of zombies devoted to Nurgle)

so no I don't think the Virus bombs will work

I agree. Virus bombs are very rare indeed. No point in wasting them, especially if the 'nids develop immunity, which they might.
