lol I would recommend looking into Linux Mint. It is based off Ubuntu but a lot more beginner friendly and user friendly. However, Linux Mint 9 is coming soon (within a month) so hold out for the new version before installing it.
As for software, you pretty much have it down (though I prefer Firefox). As for Wine, make sure you get the Development version (1.43
iirc at time of posting) as the latest "Stable" version is really outdated. What wine is is basically a way for running Windows programs on Linux. It's not perfect, but most things work.
