I just liked the beamy deffgun that was presented in Dawn of War 2, and I'm looking to write some rules for it.
The proposed rule is an option for lootas:
All models may replace deffgun with beamy deffgun - 10 points per model
Beamy Deffgun - Range 48", S 9, AP 2, Heavy 1d3-1
Note: 1d3-1 shots means that it is quite possible that the beamy deffgunz not to shoot at all.
Thoughts? Would anyone use it? Would everyone use it?

I would keep it at D3 shots, as even if they get 2 shots each, they're only BS2 which means very few shots are going to hit.

Replace the minus one with gets hot!
It would make more sense, since it's very beamy and hot and stuff.

D3-1 or D3 Gets hot seems OK..
Normal Lootas weapon is D3, so 2 shots at avetage, correct? So it makes it sorta like Autocannons.
D3-1 makes it 1 shot on average and making it an Ork Lascannon of some sort.
Don't know if Orks should have it, but those two options (D3-1 or D3 Gets hot) seems reasonable enough, I suppose..

The way I thought about it when I designed it was that IG get an infantry LC for 40 pts, so orks should get one for 25, seeing as that for every 3 hits guards makes orks make 2, but actually Gets Hot! really seems like an orkier way to balance it. Automatically Appended Next Post: This is draft #2:

So, I was giving thought to how to balance these things, seeing as leaving them at 1d3 shots still gives you more lascannon hits per 25-point loota than you get for a 40-point heavy weapon unit for the IG. I came up with a different way of doing the option that leaves it a little more balanced.
Any Mek may replace his Kustom Mega-Blasta with Kustom Mega-Deffgun - 10 pts
Kustom Mega-Deffgun - Range 48", S 9, AP 1, Heavy 1d3, Gets Hot!
This way they are very powerful indeed, but you are limited to a few of them. (It also finally makes those meks in loota boyz units worth taking.)

AP2 is fine IMO, AP1 at 48 inches is a tad over the top, even with ballistic skill Ork. You still get loads of shots anyway.

I like idea of the the AP2, either D3-1 or Gets Hot!, they both work. I like the idea of making it available to mekboys only, you need control how many guys in a unit can access St 9 guns with that kind of range.
My only real issue is that the current ork list is built with a deliberate limitation on ranged weapons. Lootas are great but their effectiveness is limited to medium armour, for cracking anything greater you have to use tankbustas or run up and punch the tank with a powerfist. The beamy deffgun is basically a gun that removes that limitation, leaving the orks with no weaknesses to counter their strengths.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

S9 really is not that impressive. They still cost a good 25 points a piece, and even if you crack shots off every turn, you're at most making about 5 actual hits before they incinerate themselves, and that's assuming that you have a lot to shoot at. Compared to three 15-point loota boyz who make a good solid ten to fourteen hits if you leave them alone. The armor ceiling is higher, but the fact that they'll cook themselves out of the unit by turn three unless you're very lucky is where the balance comes in.
Point taken about beating vehicles, though. Maybe knocking it back to AP 2 will serve better. Anyone else feeling good on that?
