So there was this kid at school who was suspended for three whole weeks. I was wondering what kind of behavior/incident could get someone suspended for that long but not expelled?
any thoughts?

Does your school have a handbook outlining the consequences of an offense that is severe enough to impose a suspension of that length? That would be the best guide to determining what if anything that suspended student did.

the handbook only describes the characteristics of a suspension (cannot make up work, etc.), and it does not discuss how one would get one of that length. Many violations of the handbook may result in suspension, but specific lengths are not specified. So no help there.

He could of got into a fight, or he was smoking/doing drugs or brought a knife to school Those are all common thing people get suspended for in my school.

Around here, 3 week suspensions can come for a variety of reasons...

the kid doesn't do drugs and doesn't own a knife. Also, i don't think that a fight is worth 3 weeks, and no-one else was suspended for fighting.
At Alpharius- I already asked around, noone has any clue.

He wasn't expelled, so violence and bomb threats are unlikely.
My guess would be a drug violation, or some similar offense which affected only him.

Here's a cut and paste job from the Chicago Public Schools:
Looks like we top out at 10 days. At those levels of misconduct, students
often qualify for jail time or other situations that would remove them from the
classroom anyway.
Group 4 - Acts of Misconduct
* False activation of a fire alarm
* Assault
* Vandalism or criminal damage to property
Disciplinary Action
* Minimum: Teacher-Student-Parent-Resource Person-Administrator Conference
* Maximum: Suspension (one to 10 days) Disciplinary Reassignment, and Police Notification
Group 5 - Acts of Misconduct
* Aggravated assault
* Trespassing
* Disorderly Conduct
Disciplinary Action
Suspension (six to 10 days) and/or Disciplinary Reassignment and/or Police Notification. Both arrest by the Police and expulsion. If a student is expelled, Alternative School Placement may be recommended for the period of the expulsion.
Group 6 - Acts of Misconduct
* Use, possession, and/or concealment of a firearm/destructive device or other weapon
Disciplinary Action
Police Notification and/or arrest, suspension for 10 days, and expulsion for a period of not less than one calendar year, or as modified on a case-by-case review by the Chief Executive Officer or designee. Alternative School Placement may be recommended for the period of the expulsion. Successful completion of a Board sponsored student assistance program may serve in lieu of expulsion for first-time offenders of 6-5 Acts of Misconduct which do not involve the sale or delivery of illegal substances.

Oh man, if I tried to remember every suspension I'd got in school, I'd be here all night. My parents donated a significant amount of money to the private school I went to as a child, so I got a slap on the wrist for a few things that should have gotten me expelled or suspended. I was an extremely angry youth.

I got into a few scuffles when I was younger. Everything simmered down around midway through Yr 11 and here in Yr12 I've got not troubles with anyone at y school. I'm a good boy now, setting an example to the younger generation.
