Hello, Dakka Dakka!

I recently just picked up AoBR to play with my brother, and I'm planning to make a BA army. This is the first army I'm building and I'd like for it to be competitive with a slight focus on Jump Packs and Assault. I want to use some range to support my assaulters as my general strategy. I also favor a smaller number of models vs. a horde.

I have the codex and would like to post my army list.. But I don't know how it'll do.

Bear in mind that I am a newbie and am still learning lots.

(275) 1 Sanguinor
(255) 5 Sanguinary Guard with Death Masks and Banner
(225) 5 Death Company with Jump Packs and 2 Power Fists
(150) 1 Lemartes
(95) 10 Tactical Squad with Meltabombs
(120) 1 Dreadnought with Extra Armor
(80) 1 Scout Squad (Snipers) with Meltabombs

This comes out to 1170.

At 1500 I'd add:

(225) Commander Dante
(105) Assault Squad with Meltabombs

I feel that maybe the HQ's are point sinks.. Hopefully they are worth it?

Are there specific army brackets? 750, 1000, 1250, 1500, 2000, 2500 seem to be common army points.. Am I missing something here?

Is this competitive enough? Is there anything I can change about it and keep it assault based? What are my strengths and weaknesses with this army?

Thanks!

For one, yes the HQs here are points sinks. Between the two, you've spent fully 1/3 of your points (at 1500) on two units. See the problem emerging?

What the Blood Angels are quite exceptionally good at is fast, hard hitting assault armies. In your case, I'd reccomend dropping one of your HQs (not a big fan of Dante. Accurate Deep striking doesn't help much if you want to assault with that group) and instead take 1-2 more assault squads. A lot survivability, a lot more versatility. Assault squads with meltaguns are AWESOME tank busters, Assault squads with flamers and power weapons wreak havoc on infantry and MEQs.

IMO, Dreadnoughts with extra armor is kinda pointless. Take a Furioso and a Drop pod, or take a ranged dread with assault cannon and missile launcher. Or, better yet, since this is a fast BA list, take some Baal Preds and outflank an assault cannon or flamestorm cannon into someone's face.

Snipers with meltabombs is useless. You want them nowwhere near a tank. They're supposed to hide and shoot yes?

Your death company has a lot of power weapons for so few bodies. Throw some more guys in there for ablative wounds, as well as some more attacks. 3+ armor saves and feel no pain is very hard to kill, might as well take advantage of it.

Hopefully some actual BA players can comment on this from here, not just a Space Marine player who's read the BA codex.

Started wargaming with heroscape. Who says kids can't be generals?

Space Marines 2-1-0

In Soviet Russia.... you go to Gulag.

Hybrids armies are hard to do but not impossible.

HQ: Librarian with a jump pack 125 pts. He is cheap, gives psychic defense and has some nice abiltiies pending on what psychic abilities you choose.

Sanguinor is great but again he is a HUGE point sink and really shouldn't be used in games less then 1500. Also he should be used only in very very heavy assault style armies.

Elites: Sanguinary Guard are nice but they are never worth the points for the Death Masks. The Banner is good but if you dont have a lot of threats to shoot at, they will be focused fired. I like them in 1500+ games at least before I field them.

Death Company: So expensive and never really worth it with jump packs. Yet solid at 20 points each. In a pack of 9 ( PF, Thunder Hammer, PW, PW )with a Chaplain, they will tear peoples faces off but they will need a LR to ride in. Downside is expensive in low point games and you really need to learn the rules for rage. Rage makes you always go after the nearest enemy over every thing else ( unless mounted in a vehicle ).

Tactical Squad: Since you got the AoBR run these for now. Melta Gun or Flamer and a Missile Launcher is the ideal set up. Pending on the style of army later you will find these inferior to assault squads.

Assault Squads: This is a bread and butter unit for BA armies. 10 man with x2 Melta ( or flamer + melta ) with Srg Power Fist + Inferno Pistol with jump packs. Learn when to break them into combat squads and when not to. This is your best scoring unit.

Dreadnought: Again this comes with AoBR and no reason not to run it till you fill out your army with more models. Once you have more access to more models, unless you go with a heavy dreadnought theme then this will find no place in your army.

Scout Squad: These can be pretty nice for only 100 pts and thats with Camo. Snipers and a Missile Launcher. Melta bomb is a waste as they will die quickly in melee and you want to keep them cheap.

Things you will want in your army.

Tons of ways to deal with armor. Luckily BA armies can field a gross amount of melta or have solid range to deal with them but you will quickly find out that melta guns are the answer to mech lists. Assault Cannon is also one of the best weapons to deal with high armor vechicles and doubles up very well vs troops. Baal Predators and Predators are solid choices as well. In assualt squads I will be hard pressed not to run a Power Fist and the PF can be a threat to pretty much everything in the game.

Area Effect ( aka AE ) weapons. You will need few of these as well to deal with horde style armies. Flamers do quite nicely ( hand flamer is not worth the points ever ) and Vindicators can tear it up by dropping Str 10 Lrg Blast markers and move 12" as they fire.

Scoring Troops: 20-30 scoring troops in a game 2000 or less, 15-20 in 1k games or less.

Pschic Defense.
Librarian is the only answer here or Mephiston.

Apothicarians: These guys give you the Furious Charge and Feel No Pain. They are a must in assault armies. Careful tho, they are expensive and fragile. Personally I like them best in Honor Guard units because they no longer become a IC thus no longer can be singled out and they dont take up an Elite Slot. Also Honor Guard can be equipped for basically any situation you may come across.

Are there specific army brackets?

1500 and 2k are usually the most popular.

Is this competitive enough?

Short answer is no. There are many articles on these boards that will talk about Blood Angel army lists. I STRONGLY recommend you to proxy models till you play enough games to learn which units work for you and which don't before you go on a buying spree. The box set you have gives you some models to help get things going.

I myself am not a fan of powerfists. So I wouldn't use them on your Death Company, make use of Furious Charge more. Since you want to focus on Jump Packs and Assualt I will show you my army. 1500pts

Dante w/ Honour Guard

5x Death Company w/ Lemartes

Assualt Squad w/ Flamer and Hand Flamer

Scouts w/ Shotguns

Baal Predator w/ Heavy Flamers and Assualt Cannon

Vanguard Veterans w/ Power Weapons

Thanks to all you guys for your very substantial replies!

I think most of my army will now be assault based, with some ranged weapons in a few of the squads for tank busting. Your guys' replies were very helpful!

Here is what I'm thinking so far (no points values because I'm trying to find a nice core group of units so far) :

190 = Librarian, Infernus Pistol, Epistolary, Jump Pack
230 = Sanguinary Guard, Chapter Banner
170 = Sanguinary Priests
250 = 10 man Assault Squads, 2 Meltas, Srg with PF and Infernus Pistol.
100 = Scouts, Camo Cloaks, Missile launcher

1190 Total so far. I'd be set for a 1200 pt army, and i'd probably just add another Assault Squad for a 1500?

Who should I attach my Librarian to? How do I maximize the his effectiveness?
Can I attach my 3 Sanguinary Priests (Apothecarians equivalent, I believe?) to 3 different squads?
What squads are eligible for an attachment of an IC?

If I have extra points, should I use them on more squads or better wargear?

Also, if I use combat squads and separate an Assault squad into 2 5-man's, then does that second squad get a sergeant?

Thank you guys so much! Your replies are very helpful!
