Hey guys, I got a couple questions about dragon ogres.

1) are they worth taking, with other choices to consider?
2) at what point level are they best taken?

hope to hear ur guy's responses.

thanks in advanced

Don't think I've played against Chaos Warriors since the new edition was released, so not had much experience against Dragon Ogres of late.

Do they still become Frenzied when hit by lightning? If so, beware Skaven armies with Warlock Engineers who will deliberately hit you with warp lightning and then feed you cheap units like slaves and giant rats.

Cannot say me and dragon ogres have gotten very well at all. For what they do, they seem too expensive, and to continue Flashman's comment, people will indeed throw a lightening spell at you, in order to get your expensive unit that is charging towards something important into a mob of rats.

Some people have had success with them, but i just find them frustrating and boring.

Nope

They cost SO MUCH for what they can do...they're just terrible.

The best points level is never.

They cost for 1 w/ a great weapon is 77 points, 73 for one w/ AHW (a stupid choice)

Champ is 20 points if you want, we won't include that.

So, 3 Gw-Dragon Ogres costs 231, MORE than a unit of knights, that are so much terribly better.

You'll probably want 4 anyways, so add on another 77, theres 308 points for a unit that will most likely die to missle fire, and when they get in combat, won't do very much.

Wait for the new rules before ruling them out, though! Large models might be getting a boost, who knows maybe it will affect dragon ogres and make them a bit more viable...

I've been running 3 drogres w/ gw in my 2250 WoT games, and here's what I can tell you:

1) They have never survived a game.
2) They have only actually been killed once, all other games they flopped in combat and were either run down (despite 3D6) or broke in turn 6.
3) They have never killed anywhere close to their points, with the most points being 176 points of rat ogres (another poor 40mm infantry choice IMO).

Drogres are without a doubt overcosted, and their apparent benefits - M7, S7, W4 - have never paid off for me in game. Drogres are only good at staying alive vs non-multiplier attaks (so not bolters, cannons or tenderizers), but quite poor at everything else.

I would love this, because without being frenzied I cannot trust my 9 attaks of drogre to beat 20 slaves. Truth. Though skaven are part of the reason I've got mine around ...

I disagree on ahw, I think that might be the ONLY way to run them. Problem is most all of us have modeled ours with gw because S7 is so sexy looking (increasingly it won't matter, if 8th does away with armor ablation and chariot popping), yet 9 WS4 attaks is nothing. 12 WS4 is starting to sound like something.

I'm keeping mine around for two reasons:

1) The most prevalent and game-breaking monsters out there are probably the doomwheel and the HPA (fine, the hydra is the real killer, but nothing kills hydras so whatever). Both of these are WS3 and, since they don't bring their own CR with them, drogres stand a chance of catching them and crumping them. Mostly the wheel though, as its lightning just makes drogres hit harder. The HPA, with regen and the ability to kill ALL of the drogres in one round, is another story!
2) 8th edition promises good things for drogres. Not just the big infantry boost - i.e. crush attaks vs smaller targets, so more attaks ftw - but also that M7 will get to charge +3D6 (take the highest) makes them far faster than much of the army. Oh, and if knights can't march, there's another HUGE boost up for drogres. The main downside is going to be the strike-at-initiative and/or the gw ASL bullsh!t, both of which gank drogres pretty hard. With W4 each they may be able to soak it though, which would be nice as it puts their only upside (recall: living vs small arms and non-hero combat) to use.
