Hey guys,

I play Ultramarines, but I want to take a Vulkan equivalent. I am thinking that fluff wise he will be 'The Keeper of Relics'. A title that is on a par with 'The Master of the Forge' and 'The Chief librarian'. This would put him in the higher echelons of the chapter and entitle him to lead an army into battle, and would also give him access to all the cool gear that Vulkan has.

As for the gear itself, the Relic Blade and the Flamer Glove are fairly easy to work into the fluff and don't pose too many problems in a UM army. The cloak on the other hand just doesn't work for me. Drake scales are just too closely tied to the lore of the Salamanders. So, I am thinking of a cloak that is a Pre-Heresy relic that can allow bullets and the like to pass right through it and the person wearing it. Now obviously it isn't perfect and doesn't totally cover the wearer, so that he can still be killed, but it makes killing him harder.

From a modeling standpoint I would like to do a cloak that looks something like the 'Spawn' characters cloak. (See below) It would be huge and 'voluminous' and feel as if it almost floats with a life of its own. I have an Idea on how to model it but will need to experiment some with GS and tinfoil.

So guys, what do you think ? Does this sound reasonable from a fluff point of view ? I would be interested in hearing how other people have incorporated Vulkan into their own armies.

Thanks,
Stubby.

Some people may accuse you of cheese.

I just think that, if you have fun and if you like your own fluff, you should go with it.

I personally think it's a pretty cool idea.

I plan on using Vulkan in my UM list as well. I agree, they do have a bunch B.A. individuals amongst them. They are also the most self sufficient and funded chapter so it only fits that they would have access to superior equipment. You have just given a legitimate background to field Vulkan, thanks . as far as modelling, I'm just going to use a relic blade and storm shield, the flamer I haven't worked out yet.

Since the Ultramarines are supposedly the ultimate example of the codex, I wouldn't really say they're a chapter you should customise... I'd limit it to successor chapters myself.

However, if you've already modelled Ultramarines, I can't blame you

I agree. They aren't going against the codex astartes, they just have better stuff. which makes sense since they are the largest, most organized and powerful company. They protect a whole system of planets that hail to them. They can call on the armies of Ultramar which are better equiped than a lot of gaurd armies. So the elite they serve would only get the best equipment to the utmost standard of quality.

Moving flat out..

The fluff seems reasonable enough.. they ARE Ultramarines, so they have everything they want to have.

Just give him a stormshield..... 3++ done!

But if you expect a Stormshield nerf in 6th. , than an awesome cloak is cool, of course.

The last post before you was from 2010, that's what he means.
That being said, if the OP did do this model and see this, pics would be nice as it sounds like a cool model.

Just call it an "Ultracloak" - this way it will fit in with the blood angel and space wolf stuff and not stand out so much.

Ultra Ultrasmurf of the Ultramarines with his ultracloak.

Just rolls off the tongue, innit?

[/sarcasm] in case anyone failed to see it.

I've got no problem with it. Use a Vulkan analogue in my own vanilla marines army (alongside tiggy).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
