Hey all. I have fallen on hard times financially and unfortunately need to sell my 40K pride and joy, my FW Thunderhawk. I've never sold a model so large, expensive, and well painted before so I'm looking for some advice on how to go about it and how much to ask for.

Since I'm selling it with IA:2 included, the retail "cost of model" for everything I'm selling with it is $703.65. That includes the Thunderhawk, the bomb pylons, IA:2, and the Chaos Rhino used for the base (I didn't include materials for the base or anything). Everything except the bomb pylons was built and painted by the fine folks over at Blue Table Painting. Here are some pictures of the Thunderhawk, its base, and all of its magnetized weapon options.

How much would be appropriate to ask for? I realize that it is impossible to recoup all of the funds that I put into the model and its professional build/painting service, but I would still like for the model to fetch a good amount as it is an impressive miniature, it has significance for me, and I really need as much as I can get to pay off bills.

I'm going to lock this temporarily and see about having it moved over to Dakka Discussions. That's the best place to ask / get feedback on what price to sell something for, or how much it's worth.

Well, I think that's the trouble with selling non-commissioned miniatures; they rarely go for as much as they're worth. If I were you I might put it on ebay, there you can start it at what you think it's worth and let it go from there. If no one bids, then admit partial defeat and lower your price a bit.

"This is TOO expensive." "I'm going TO the store, TO get some stuff."
"That is THEIR stuff." "THEY'RE crappy converters."
"I put it over THERE." "I'll go to the store THEN."
"He knows better THAN that." "This is NEW." "Most players KNEW that."

I definitely understand how difficult it can be to peg down a price that factors in the commissioned work on the model, I sold a Thunderbolt a while back. My main problem with the Thunderhawk is just because its such a large model and worth a pretty decent sum of money. One of my friends keeps urging me to sell for no less then $1000, and while I could definitely use that much to pay off my bills I'm not sure if that is realistic to ask seeing as how the buyer could make the same thing for $700 and a whole lot of work.

A new day, a new time zone.

That's the thing with trying to sell it, you have to find that person willing to give you $1000 for it. At least with e-bay, you can reach a lot more potentially interested parties who might fall into that category.

From much experience with selling used models, both nicely painted and badly painted: You never get what it's "worth". The problem arises especially with painted models. I have a friends and customers who all want a thunderhawk and would pay good money for a finished thunderhawk that matched: Space Wolves with a slightly darker grey than normal look, Blood Angels, Legin of the Damned, or Salamanders in a very dark green.

Commisioned models general please the person they were commissioned for. Less pleasing to people who don't want that paint scheme. Because there is less demand, they go for less.

Your friend wants you to try for 1k. Reasonable if and only if you find someone that really wants it in that color scheme, and has 1k to spend. Other wise it will go for less. Unless 10 guys all like that scheme and have deep pockets and they will bid it up.

It's a vanity piece with little use in the game as a playing piece. The person that wants one will want it in the colors of his army.

I'd put it on EBay with a minimum, and see how it flies.

....and lo!.....The Age of Sigmar came to an end when Saint Veetock and his hamster legions smote the false Sigmar and destroyed the bubbleverse and lead the true believers back to the Old World.

No pun intended...?

I agree with the strategy suggested... give it a try, see if it works- it's a wonderful piece and might be worth it to someone. You could put it up just with "Buy It Now" or the like... let us know what you go with!

I'll buy that thing from you for ten dollers.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

Yeah thats helpful...

The going rate for BTPs trade-in program is only 12% of the price, but I imagine that if you where to sell it as "BTP Painted Thunderhawk" you would have a LOT more succes with getting around the amount you want for it. Especially if you mention how much they would take for it if you where to buy it from them directly.

Just saying "pro painted" doesn't really have the same ring as the BTP stamp of quality (IMHO of course). Hope it helps - and do update this thread if you manage to sell it off

I've found then when selling painted miniatures that weren't for commission I am lucky to get what I paid for the mini if that's any help....It is really well painted and I would try both the forums and EBay....

There are also several independent gaming stores that may be able to sell on consignment for you and it is usually worth asking.....I've sold more then a few armies that way...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Just read your in San Diego try Game Empire down there they usually able to get top dollar especially for cooler pieces like this....
