Subject: Dark Eldar Jetbike Armor Save - is there an adjustment?
|
 |

Greetings,
Today the question is about the Dark Eldar wargear - Reaver Jetbike. Regular RJB units have always had a 4+ armor save,which is superior to the regular DE Warrior's save of 5+. The question is, what becomes of the armor save when an IC or upgrade character purchases and equips a RJB? Per the Codex Errata on GW's site [em];
Page 14, Reaver Jetbike. The entire entry should
be replaced with the following:
‘A Dark Eldar character on a Reaver Jetbike
changes its unit type from Infantry to Jetbike,
with all of the benefits of an Eldar Jetbike
described in the rulebook. The model gains +1
Toughness as normal, but also +1 Strength due
to the combat blades fixed to the bike. The bike
comes with an in-built splinter rifle, which does
not count towards the character’s weapons
allowance. Characters mounted on Jetbikes
cannot be given Webway Portals or Crucible of
Malediction.’
Per the core rulebook the Eldar Jetbike doesn't effect armor at all.
Per the Eldar Codex the Eldar Jetbike confers a 3+ save
What save should an IC have when equipping a RJB? (his unmodified armor save, a 4+ armor save, or a 3+ armor save)

The logic there being;
rulebook = rulebook
codex = codex
What about the rule on a codex overriding the rulebook?

I just want to point out that this has been a hugely common mistake on this debate in the past.
RJB squads are NOT DE Warriors on jetbikes; they are DE Wyches on jetbikes. If one were going to make the assumption that the RJB grants an armor save increase to a rider, it would have to be an increase of 2 rather than 1 (Wyches having an armor save of 6+). {Edit: I believe they are wyches and not warriors 'cuz they're on drugs; some may disagree.}
Personally, even as a DE player of almost ten years, I have never believed that the RJB was supposed to grant an armor save increase.

RJB Riders are part of the Wych Cult, per fluff. The stats agree with you since the initiative is also a Wych initiative.
I'll withdraw that point of the question if it pleases thee.

Hey, don't get me wrong. I'd love it if I could put my Archon on a bike and have a 3+/2++ save. That would make me exceedingly happy. I'm hoping someone proves my position wrong.

Since none of the relevant rules say to modify his armour, his armour remains unchanged.
...with all of the benefits of an Eldar Jetbike
described in the rulebook.
The rulebook reference is about giving the jetbike the extra movement in the assault phase. You don't reference any of the rules in the Eldar codex because the rules don't tell you to do so.

We play it as no bonus to the Armor save for lords.
Also, RJB riders are T4 where Lords are T3(4). So Lords on bikes can be insta-killed by strength 6 where regular bikers are not.

Actually, RJB squad members are instantly killed by S2 weapons if they fail their armor save. All RJB squad members only have one wound.

LOL, my bad, you're right. Forgot about that.
For me, any lord taking a bike gets a shadowfield - if the shadowfield is already allocated to an HQ I will never give the 2nd HQ a bike. Thus, in my lists, an Archon will only ever be able to take a bike and the 2nd HQ will either get an Incubi retinue or be slotted to ride with a squad with a raider.

I do agree with that. I've always thought they had the 4+ but since I only ever run an HQ on a bike with a Shadowfield it really doesn't come up much.
I do agree with the generally expressed opinion as to there being no armor adjustment and why. I'll have to remember this if ever I lose my Shadowfield and manage to live another round.
