Hey guys, I just got done with a battle against IG with my Necrons (And won!)... but here's the questions that came about as a result for it. They're kinda complicated, as I have a tendency to over-embellish.

1. Scarab Swarms, as the Swarm type listed in the Codex, don't take dangerous terrain checks when landing on difficult terrain, though they move like Jetbikes. Do they, however, take dangerous terrain checks when assaulting through difficult terrain, as Jetbikes would?

2. If you assault with more than one squad, (let's say three), onto a single enemy squad, do you have to declare it, move all three into assault at the same time, and resolve the assault down the Initiative ladder, with the defender being able to chose which squad he retaliates against? Or do you assault with one squad, and resolve it, one at a time? If one at a time, then do the defenders get to retaliate against each squad as they assault in that turn? Or only the first one?

3. A IG command squad with a couple of attatched unique characters is assaulted, and since none of the unique characters are in BTB contact, I cannot target them. Their entire scrub entourage is wiped out before the IG squad has a chance to do anything, leaving the independent characters left out of B2B contact. Does this mean these characters are no longer locked in combat, and can move about as they wish on their next turn? And do I get a consolidate move for inflicting more wounds and separating the squad, effectively ending an assault with me as the victor?

1. If they move like jetbikes, then they would only be affected by rules on jetbikes in the movement phase.
2. Everyone at once. All assualt at the same time.
3. They were not in BTB, but were with the squad in CC, so they would stay if they pass leadership or run. So, they would have been locked.

2. You must move all units before fighting any close combat. So, if you want to assault with three squads against one, you need to move one whole squad as legally as possible at a time, which could limit how the subsequent squads are able to reach contact. Only after all assaulting units have been moved do you roll any attack dice.

3. They are still part of the same squad, they are only separate when attacks are made. Therefore, they are still locked in combat and must take a Morale test if required.

3. To add to Cheexstas reply this is because you only check unit membership *after* the IC has finihed their move - so at the end of their next movement they are no longer part of the unit.

What they said. As an additional note, when you make pile-in moves the ICs have to move first, so they probably Should have been in BtB unless something prevented them.

For question 1.), I find it's A LOT easier to just consider Destroyers, Wraiths and Scarabs to BE Jet Bikes. It's not the rules, but it's far more simple that way.

But as you said, it's not the rules, so don't do it unless your opponent agrees to it.

Scarabs still take dangerous terrain tests, just like all other "moves like jetbikes" units (except wraiths, which never take any terrain tests). It's actually in the FAQ on the GW site as well, if you wanted to look it up.

Scarabs do not take DIFFICULT terrain tests for passing THROUGH terrain, which also means that no you would not need to make a test for assaulting through cover. But it doesn't matter anyway because their initiative is so low you probably still go last. And, yes, they would take dangerous terrain tests if they ended their movement in difficult terrain.
