I have read in a number of sources that you can use Artists pastels for weathering; weathering powders just being crushed up pastels.

Does anyone have any experience/knowledge of this particular medium? Are they used in exactly the same way as weathering powders.

The reason being I can get pastels virtually for free, but are weathering powders significantly better or differant to go to the lengths of buying a set?

Cheers.

Simple answer is 'yes'.
The grain is not as fine as weathering powders but they do work.

I got a spice grater from Wilkinson's - it comes with a tray that fits to the underside. I just grated the colours I wanted, making up mixes as I went. I then emptied them into spare GW pots (when they were for sale) but any pot will do.

Pastels are a great way to get into weathering and, as you said, cheap in comparison.

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

I still use pastels, you cant spill them if they are still in stick form

And you CAN make them just as fine as the commercial powders- dont grind them(that makes them chunky) rather use some fine grit sand paper and use that to turn the pastel sticks into a fine dust.

I mix mine with rubbing alcohol since it evaporates quicker than water. And it dires with a nice flat finish, dont forget to put a sealant over the powders though- otherwise they just wipe off like any other dust.
