My friend who plays salamanders is going to get some assault marines. He says he wants a 10 man squad, but doesn't know for sure. Anyway how do you guys like to take them out? They seem like a pain to deal with. I play orks and chaos, what weapons are good for mainly those two armies, but you can use others too. Thanks, Rod!

You can shoot them, they are no tougher than normal SM, or you let them assault say a CSM squad, the combat will likely continue, then counter assault with khorne berzerkers. Or just assault them with khorne berzerkers if he lets them in range.
Assault marines are good at picking on things that don't CC, both orks and CSM do CC very well. Show his expensive SM your armies were made for CC,

Orks and Chaos are geared towards assault.
Your cc oriented units are better than Assault Marines.

A regular squad of CSM is just as good as assault marines in combat, better in shooting, and cheaper. Cult marines (berserkers or plagues) are around the same price as assault marines, but better than them in combat. Chaos doesn’t generally have anything to fear from assault marines.
Orks just need to look out for assault marines carrying flamers. Those can hurt. If you can get the charge on the AMs using a squad in a trukk or battlewagon, you can keep them from flaming you, and just drag them down by weight of numbers, just as you do when fighting tactical marines. The extra +1 attack per model the AMs bring isn’t that scary.

I don't know about chaos, but Assault Marines can barely stand up to Boyz model-to-model, and you should outnumber them 3 to 1. They shouldn't pose much of a threat.

Alright guys thanks for the help! I can kinda see why they aren't as effective as i thought. One last thing, would you guys suggest putting a fair amount of fire or just wait till cc to deal with them?

Unless he is playing Blood Angels, or a specifically tailored group of Space Wolves, Chaos or Orks can out CC him in a heartbeat. His only hope is to Deep Strike them in and pray they take out something big in a suicide run. A decent sized unit of Boyz or CSM should be able to deal with his flying SMurfs. As for shooting them, if you can spare the firepower, go for it, otherwise show him the folly of his ways.

Something worth pointing out is that Assault Marines in a Salamander Army can have Twin-Linked Flamers, which will do a number on both Chaos Space Marines and Orks simply through the sheer number of wounds that can be caused.
Something to worry about is their mobility. Not only can they move 12" a turn in the movement phase, they can jump over other units as well. That means that you need to organize screening units so that they don't allow any space for the Assault Marines to jump in between screening units and more worthwhile prey.
They can also Deep Strike, which combined with the Twin-Linked Flamers and other knick-knacks, can mean doom for stuff like Obliterators, Lootas, and so on.
This mobility can seriously affect Orks, since Orks either rely on the charge, or have short (18") range on their main firepower. The Assault Marines can either deny you your Furious Charge and Charge Bonus (No +1S, +1I, and +1A), or use the Assault Marines to tip combats in the Space Marine's favour by having them leap in after you've locked his Tactical Space Marines down in combat.
