Okay, I'm finally taking the plunge after years of lurking. I'm going to build a chaos renegade force (lots of loyalist gear & armor) and a Deathwing army as a side project. So, basically, I have two questions:

1.) I was thinking of buying two Black Reach boxes and somehow swap the ork stuff for more marines. Am I likely to find someone here or on Bartertown who wants to do that or should I just put them up on ebay & use the money however I see fit?

2.) I don't have paints, brushes, or any other necessities. What do I need to get started? I'm probably ordering from The Warstore because everyone loves them. Is there some handy convenient package deal or kit with paints, green stuff, brushes, etc. they sell that you guys would recommend?

"Well, isn't the enemy of your enemy, like, your friend? Or whatever? Can't they team up?"
"Not exactly. In this setting, the enemy of your enemy is still a floating, greasy, armored brain."
"Well, what about his enemy? Maybe you could be friends with him."
"No, because that guy is a mechanical horror in an undying battle shell. He sails from world to world in a flying tomb, serving gods who eat hope."

I beleive there is such a thing as the Assault on black Reach Paint Set.

Other than that, you're probably better off buying as you need.

You may want to just ask in your local store when you buy the AoBR, there may just be another customer wanting to start with Orks. But I'm sure Orks will sell on eBay.

I'm also pretty sure that GW do several paint sets if you check out their web page. Although you may find brushes cheaper in a regular craft store or LGS. LGS often carry paints cheaper than GW too, but choosing a paint brand to use is personal choice.

Apologies for talking positively about games I enjoy.

I wouldn't go with a paint pack - you'll end up with colours you don't need and the current GW pots dry up relatively quickly.

This is less of a problem with reaper or vallejo pots as they seal much better.

I would say that you can indeed find someone on Btown (or here on DD swap shop) who would swap Orks for SM, may not be immediate, but you certainly can find someone. If not, then go Ebay.

Since you are looking at double the SM component already, maybe try to swap the orks for other SM gear, like a Rhino or an Assault squad, or an Assault Terminator upgrade.

Do you intend to keep both rulebooks and templates? I would suggest you do so, having a spare is nice. If not, you can probably get 12-15 for the book alone.

I buy the vast majority of my brushes from Michaels Crafts, and some paint there as well. Otherwise, get a spray primer like Krylon from Walmart ($3 a can) and then get some GW or Reaper paints as your scheme dictates.

I really appreciate all the advice, guys. How many of you think Vallejo or reaper paints are better than GW? Can I get them from the Warstore?

Also, I live in LA and there's a few Michael's nearby. Which size brushes should I pick up? I'm going to be painting a few dreadnoughts and rhinos, are there big thick brushes I should use for vehicles? Does GW still sell spray cans? And what primer do you recommend?

Sorry for all these questions. I've got some extra cash for this hobby, but not so much that I can waste a few hundred on stuff I won't use.

Darth, there's a bunch of Dakkaites in Los Angeles that play 40K, myself included. Are you anywhere near Santa Monica? We've got a pretty active group locally, and our FLGS is hosting 'Ard Boyz this weekend.

For Primer, a bunch of us are really loving the P3 primer. Reasonably priced, and does a really nice primer coat. For brushes, you'll want a range of sizes in sable brushes.

Less QQ, more pew pew!

I'm in Hollywood, but unlike everyone else in this town I actually enjoy driving around. What's the store?
