Devastating Dark Reaper

Anyone have a recommendation for a detailed skirmish game?
What I'm looking for:
* average model count 6 or less per side, playable with three or less (heroes)
* primarily fantasy (magic / psi / special abilities)
* character-based, but less than an RPG.
I've got Malifaux, but I'm wondering if there's something more swords-n-sorcery out there.
Thanks!

Check out the Anima tactics thread. My tournament army cost 65 bucks and is 6 members strong. Each character has the equivalent tactical options a War Machine warcaster would have. Simple rules, ridiculous amounts of strategy. Highly recommend!

I suggest Warhammer: Skirmish if you're looking for a fantasy setting. To put it plainly its Warhammer but with Warhammer 40k movement-style. The rules are online but you have to do some searching, I find it much more enjoyable than standard Warhammer. Average models per force in one battle range from 10 to 15. You can still spend points on gear for troops/ characters and the gameplay is very fluid.

Another recommendation for Anima Tactics. Definitely designed from the ground up to be a detailed skirmish game. Warhammer:Skirmish is good, but it's still just a port of the old clunky warhammer system over to skirmish gaming.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better. |
