Hi guys,

I have read a bit about magnetising but cant find any links to guides specifically for warwalkers. Anyone got any idea where I could find one?

Any advice from people who have done it or are experienced in this area would be very welcome too. I understand most people use rare earth magnets but are there different sizes and stengths I need to be aware of?

Thanks

Yeah I've been looking into magnetising my WW so I can swap between Scatter Lasers and EMLs. Unfortunately there's precious little way to do this easily.

The way I've thought about it is gluing in the body of a WW weapon, with barrel of the weapon clipped off. Then you can magnetize and swap out the weapon barrels.
I've mocked up an illustration. This idea is © Copyright Tek 2010

Enjoy

Another method you can use is to embed magnets in the ridge when the weapon slots into the hole. KJMagnetics sells the tiniest magnets that work perfect for this. Alone they can barely hold a piece of paper up but a row of 3 can hold plastic eldar weapons and keep them straight.

Look closely at the side of the bright lance in this pic and you'll see some primer scrapped off. There is a row of three of the tiniest magnets place in.

This is a pic with the side EML attached on.

This method works good if you ever have a need to not have the weapons on, which really isn't the case for Warwalkers.

I rather like Tek's approach if your not a stickler for looks on main body of the weapon.

Thanks guys

What do you use to make a hole in plastic to set the magnet in? Is there a standard size drill bit or something?

Any suggestion on magnet size and are there different strengths?

Yeah just use a tiny drill bit to make a shallow hole. It's vital that you don't go deep with the small magnets as they will need to be flush with each other to keep the pull at full strength.

This will be the only size that will fit the spot your looking for without messing up the look. http://kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=D101-N52 and use a 1/16 drill

They are ridiculously so I can't stress enough how vital it is to drill in just a tiny bit to get a nice flush level surface. On the weapon portion just exacto off the tab that typically goes into the hole and drill in to put the mags in on that side. Also do a line of 3 magnets and try to match ten up on either side. This isn't an easy process to do, so practice on something meaningless first like some sprue.

If your going with Tek's approach use http://kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=D201-N52 and use a 1/8 drill

You can also drill a little bit deeper and drop two magnets into the hole

I have one thing to add. Get a drill bit that is the same size as you magnets. Also try to maximize the area between the pieces as it will give stability.

Yeah Mikeyboy, I got my magnets from here:

http://www.first4magnets.com/

I got a variety of widths, but 2mm is a good general size all round really. You can get 2mm drill bits from Wilkos dirt cheap. Try and get hold of a Pin Vice to put it in, it will give you better control over the drilling.

It has to be said, you really have to make the magnets flush with the surface, as if they're not touching the bond will be weaker.

Thanks all, much appreciated. Hopefully I wont make too much of a mess of it
