Ork Boy Hangin' off a Trukk
|
I've been in 40k since the early 90's and have had two ork armies, and a tyranid army. I currently have a Ultramarine and Ork army. I have always messed around with the orks and loved to scratchbuild battlewagons, Stompas, and such.
Recently I attempted a Thunderhawk and found that an Ork player who builds ork vehicles can build a Imperial Vehicle. I'm going to post a few photos and if anyone is interested in having me construct a Thunderhawk, please contact me and let me know what you are willing to pay. I use Paypal and we can do everything via Ebay or here on DakkaDakka. I love this forum and I would hate to screw up my reputation by not upholding my end of the bargain.
The Thunderhawk will be painted with a primer of your choice. I will not be able to ship the Thunderhawk with the landing gear attached so I can either leave them off or have them in a seperate location in the package for you to attach later.
I will not include a base for the Thunderhawk, but it will give you a chance to add your own personality to it.
Thank you!
DA BIG WARBOSS!!!!!!!

That much work? Labor, painting, super detailed and working cockpit and ramp with landing gear?
anything under 200 isnt fair to him IMHO.
I suggest ebay as it WILL sell for at least that if not more. Standard hawks from FW with only a tad more detail run what? 800? and thats not even painted...

Also, in an ironic twist on something you threatened to do previously, I'm going to make another promise.
If the package is not signed for, it will be returned to me. If it is returned to me, I will set out everything that is in the box of import and burn it. I will watch it go up in flames.
The video that I shoot of it will be posted to YouTube. I will email you a link, as well as post links to it in open forums.

IDK man, 200$ for some plasticard and GW bits... a bit much.
I would say Approx 100$, maybe 75 each if someone were willing to do a bulk deal (say 5 or more).
The EASILY allows for the mats to be purchased. Looking at the quality (and in no offense, it looks great!) it probably takes about an hour to make. Assuming the OP gets a finders fee, hes making at least 50$ an hour... thats more then I make, especially out of a side hobby.
Now, if this guy were promising STRICT schedules and a Satisfaction Guarantee, he could probably charge more... but from what it sounds like from the OP, this isn't the guys #1 Priority, nor is it his Primary means of Income, so to treat it as such would not be fair to the Buyer, IMHO.
You have to be careful with scratch-builds on Ebay, you may have been lucky in the past, but a person I bought a scratch-built Warhound from recently got a C&D from GW.
That being said, I have a good number of SM players in my game group, there is a good chance I might be PMing you about that 5-pack deal somewhat soon!

Just in the GW bitz, the 8 heavy bolters, the sponsons from the land raider as well as the interior cockpit and GW bitz scattered around, thats easily over 75 dollars right there.
As for an hour to make it, i seriously doubt that. In fact id love the OP to let us know how much he spent in bitz alone and then how many hours he put into it.

Well, the OP has a multi-page blog about how he created this monster.. out of wood pressboard. Not plasticard. Model tanks, etc..

In there he talks cost, time and materials.

Wrong.
That isn't all you are paying for when you buy something hand made by an artisan/craftsman. You are paying for his time and skill to produce the final product.
I know personally when i build terrain/tables for people my times is easily worth 10-15 dollars an hour over and above the cost of materials.
I bet that Thunderhawk easily has 10-15+ hours of labor into it.
Any bid less then $150 is an insult imho given the quality fo the final product...

Wow...I'm really getting you guys going. Sorry for leaving this open for such debate. I would hope anywhere around $150 would be nice. I've decided to make a few first then post them up... i'm not going to get an order then make it. I will let all of you know once I have a few made.
Oh...and yes it took me atleast 10 or more hours to make and yes it was from things I had lying around or given to me... but the Engines are a $20 dollar purchase if not more now... I got lucky on Ebay for mine. The bits are a bugger to locate and well the tank would be impossible to purchase and use again. I would have to come up with a different upper portion. But hey... I enjoy what i do and we'll see what happens on Ebay.
Thanks for all the ideas and suggestions.

Just checked around ebay and amazon.com, the pod racer is going for 37-57 alone right now. GW bits are always pricey (even assuming that you can get the ones you want).
Even though RedStarOne and I have had our issues, he is right: Don't think that this is a dinky 2 hour product to knock out. If it was that easy then EVERYONE would be making them and showing up for Appoc with a Marine Airforce.

People who are claiming the thing should go for 200+ should either be purchasing them immediately for that price, or keeping their mouths shut.
Telling me that the "bits alone" are worth 75$ is hogwash. If you are paying full retail for bits, you are doing it wrong. Horde-O-Bits on ebay will get you these things (lascannons, heavy bolters, etc) for 99cents for anywhere from 5-10. The cannon might be more, unless that too is scratch built from PVC pipe and greenstuff (Or my personal fave, a .50 cal round or similar), costing about 1.50$ (on a bad day). The engines, I have no idea... I guess if you are constantly using podracer/Xwing bits it could start running you some money. If you used Valk engines, it will run you ~9$ a pair, battlestar games has them on ebay quite frequently. If someone requested a turbo-laser, thats a bit extra, but again, nothing a brass rod couldn't fix.
The time is something I can understand, as after that guy who sold me the Scratch-built warhound got his C&D, he kinda gave me the plans/I disassembled/reassembled the thing to learn how to recreate them.
What I have learned is that is almost exactally like building the stock models. I'm sure everyone remembers building their first LandRaider/Monolith/Defiler/etc after throwing away the instructions. While the first one may be a bit time consuming, afterwards you could spit out 10 in the time it took you for the first. Thats what I have learned about SBs. The initial reconstruction of the titan was a 'batch'-and-a-half and probably took far longer then it needed to. After I get my Decals I ordered and finish painting I will happily show it, and subsequent Warhounds have been actually rather simple (taking anywhere from 1-4 hours, 1 hour if I am only paying attention to the model, 4 if I am watching tv/ taking constant smoke breaks/ have people over) and I have the hopes of making at least one for the 6 Imperium/Chaos players in our group (I plan on making a giant jump pack for the Blood Angels player's titan, just for fun). These sheet metal scratchbuild's are not "easy" to build, nor are they cheap in mats, but once I get enought time (aka, after budget season, im a Federal Employee in R&D, fraggin healthcare reform...) I probably be throwing my stuff up here on Daka for about 75$ a titan (more if people request customisation) mainly because, as you said, its a FUN thing to do. To do something that is FUN at the AMATURE level (albiet it an amazing model, which it is) and expect to charge as much as an Xbox 360 elite is a bit.. whats the word.. greedy? (BTW OP, I UNDERSTAND YOU HAVE NOT DONE THIS, PLEASE DONT THINK THE PREVIOUS STATEMENT WAS A PERSONAL ATTACK. AS STATED, I WILL PROBABLY HAVE A DECENT SIZED ORDER FOR YOU IN THE NEAR FUTURE AS MY GAMING GROUP IS FULL OF SM PLAYERS WITH BIG BANK ACCOUNTS)
Tl;dr if you aren't going to buy, don't appraise what you 'would' pay (especially if you are a rival/peer dealer, as it just comes off as attempting to price spike to make your overexpensive products seem more fairly priced).
Again, I do want to emphasize how amazing the model is. Also the fact that you are going with pressedboard instead of pure plasticard is worth mentioning. I will get with dem space marinez and let you know how many and how much they can afford. Also keep in mind, with our group, time is never really an issue. If you want 6 months to complete a project, say 6 months I am sure they won't mind. (and if you are ever looking for cheap bits to make anything, let me know. Horde-O-Bits is actually located pretty close to where I live, so I order from them alot and have tons of excess bits lying around. ((something like 5-10 rhino sprues of everything but the main hull parts for just one example)))

Just checked out Horde O Bits Ebay Store for the Following prices:
LR Side Mounts no guns included 18$ for 2 (18$)
Heavy Bolters (need 8 total) 3$ for 3 (9$ with one extra)
Las Cannons (need 2): 7$ for 3 (7$ with one extra)
Valk Missles (need 6): 4$ for 2 (12$)
Shadowsword Cannon: 11.50$
2 Land Raider Hatch Bits: none found
Mounting for Hvy Bolters (under wings need 2): none found (could get two crusader top turret assemby for 22 each)
That is 57.50 from Horde o Bits (101.50 if you wanted the correct looking mounts for your Hvy Bolters).
the price of 75 that was indicated, while slightly inflated, is hardly hogwash.

Well guys.... it looks like my post has gotten you all in trouble, but the great thing is.... you all have done R&D for me and have saved me some time in the making of the Thunderhawks.
I appreciate all the comments and suggestions. I'm pretty sure I will be able to sell a few of these on Ebay for atleast $150 if not more. I made a scratch built Stompa and sold it for well over $200 to a guy in Australia... the bad thing is GW came out with the Stompa kit like a few months later. I'm afraid i'm going to make a couple Thunderhawks and GW is going to come out with a kit within the year.
Have a good one and I will be posting again once I get one completed.
