What do you guys think will be the optimum formation for large infantry in the new rules? I’m thinking of things like minotaurs, treekin, and the like. Being a wood elf player, obviously treekin are what I’m particularly interested in but I think it will be similar across the board.

I don’t think there’s any rule that could entice me to run my treekin 2 (or even 3) deep. Bolt throwers causing multiple wounds are just too nasty against that kind of thing.

Let’s say I have 16-18 treekin (I have 8, and 8 more being commissioned, and could pick up a few more if needed). I could run them as:

xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx

Or

xxxx xxxx
xxxx xxxx

Or (adding in 2 extras)

xxx xxx xxx
xxx xxx xxx

What do you think will be the ideal formation for these and similar units? I’m leaning towards the first option, but it’d be cool if they made it worth it to put them in multiple ranks!

Well unless you're playing a purely forest spirit army, I'd run no more than 4 Treekin!

They're great, but honestly, they cost buckets in money and points and there are other special choices that are really good *cough* wild riders *cough*

Well, I am going pure forest spirits, so that's why . I've actually been running 2 units of 4 and been very, very pleased with them so far!

Just curious if th enew rules might make it worthwhile to run them in some other formation. The beastmen book kept showing minotaurs in a 3x2 formation, and if the rumor about large creatures getting all their attacks from the second row is true, I could partially see why...

Bolt throwers going through and causing wound multipliers shuts that down quick, though!

I was actually thinking the same thing, RItides, at first I thought it was just GW making them look cooler when ranked up, but it does make sense now.

Shenanigans, I call them.

The only bolt throwers that should really be ruining your day are flaming Dwarf ones.

All bolt throwers will have to completely kill the first thing they hit to get to the next rank- which isn't that likely unless it's flaming.

Consider a hit from O&G- needs a 3+ to wound, you have to fail your ward, and it needs to roll max wounds before it can advance to the next. Not impossible by any means, but not all that likely.

Great cannons and flaming, magical bolts though? There's problems.

It's funny that they may have looked far enough in advance to do things like rank the minos up appropriately for 8th. The dwarf book, which came out right before 7th is filled with pictures of them still ranked up 4 wide...

“It was in lands of the Chi-An where she finally ran him to ground. There she kissed him deeply as he lay dying, and so stole from him his last, agonized breath.

On a delicate chain at her throat, she keeps it with her to this day.”

That's funny... my last two opponents were dwarf players with flaming bolt throwers, so it's on my mind apparently . The cannons, though... I don't really see any way around that (except to hope for a misfire?)

"Shenanigans" I say as well, Karon . But I think it'd be cool to see some different formations / more ranks than are used currently.

Reds8n was saying that the minotaurs in the book were ranked up in anticipation of 8th ed back when they were released.

You're right, Gonads but I'm just now getting on board here

Since I'm a sucker for rumors like this, I gave in and ordered 2 more treekin. So now I'll be able to run them as three units of 3x2, or two units of 3x2 and two of 3x1

I think the second option is preferable, since being wood elves I can probably hide two units from cannons by moving trees... but three is a bit much! The smaller two units could act as flankers like I use them now. If the rumors turn out to be false, I can always go back to the original plan! And everyone gets to say "I told you so" for me being a sucker

Yeah, 8th looks like its going to shake up WHFB quite a bit.

I am excited to run big blocks of Gors/Ungors with the horde special rule, though, eventually once I get the figures. 10 wide, 5 deep....quite hard to maneuver. It would basically just be going forward the whole time.

Hm, here's a thought: With the new Optimum Formation rules, do Ushabti keep their title as the best Ogre-sized model unit?

Put the Tyrant in there, it jumps to Ld9.

However, I don't see much use in the formation seeing as how you aren't getting some 6 attackers per rank against a min-front 20mm, 5 attackers per rank against min-front 40mm or 25mm, and even max of 10-wide front 20mm or 25mm you're missing out on 3 or 1 model a rank (respectively).
