I used some plastic tubes and bits for the axle, and used sprue pieces for the armature. Still looks kinda scrawny to me (gotta add some gubinz to beef it up). I used a spool from a shipping lable printer and did what oadie suggested with tracing and plastic strips. Here's some pics for inspiration:
