Hey, I have my shiny (paperback ) MkII Prime rulebook.
I’ve decided upon Cryx.

I wanted to start with Coven, but I think I’ll start with Denny and some of the other models in the starter box.

The general idea with the list is to hit hard and fast. Hitting hard comes from the de-buffs, while everything is really fast. IIRC, most things are Spd 7 some are 6.
25 points is the goal.

Denny-comes in the starter box. De-buffs to help the rest of the list. She uses the two Arcs to stay out of trouble

Wretch-comes in the starter box. Might get a shot off, best to use it as a rangefinder I’m guessing.
Ripper-comes in the starter box. I might use it to slam or something, so having a CC bonejack “might” come in handy, but yes, Arcing is their first job. I considered a Stalker before for a cool assassin but I think the Arc is more important.

3 Soulhunters-their average stats are not as bad with de-buffs helping all three of their attacks, and ghostly helps them somewhat to getting to maximize their attacks, though the big base does hinder them a bit in regards to moving completely past. (Main reason: lovely models.)

Withershadow-a tool box unit, free upkeep to save focus, they can do anti-infantry/solo with dark fire and can do anti-jack, even easier with de-buffs. (Main reason, lovely models)

Siren-adds another spray and helps denny with that one focus for the Arcs.

Denny, wither, and Siren have stealth.
The Soulhunters and Jacks don’t have that kind of defense. They are supposed to deploy on the flanks and run like mad.

I have 9 points left.
I need some more bodies in the form of a unit.

I was looking into the Satyxis Raiders and their UA. They are not tough, but they stick to the ideals of the list. They do anti-infantry/shield walls/ and really don’t mind scratch up a jack.

If I do go this route, then I’d have a min sized squad and then 2 points left over for a Skarlock for more focus efficiency or Gorman for the all important cloud to keep the quite exposed denny, though a really cool model, I’m not sure if I want to go ‘out’ of the list of Faction models.

Other options…
Max McThralls and 2 units of Necro Surgeons to act as a recyclable shield for Denny and can hit pretty hard with debuffs going on. I’m not too hot about the models, but like the swarm theme. But they are slow.

Bane X, Y, Z… they are slow. If Tartarus is included then only the Thralls can fit at a min sized unit. I like the models though and the BThrall Unit Attachment looks real good.

What do you guys think of the list in general? Will it work for this newbie?

Basically:

pDenny
Wretch
Ripper
6 Raiders and Witch
3 Soulhunters
Withershadow Combine
Siren
-Skarlock, another Siren, or Gorman

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Could work, but you probably get crushed by high armor. And you definitely either hit hard first, or fall apart shortly after.

There are no nightwretches in the starter. there is a Slayer Helljack, 2 Deathripper Bonejacks, and 1 Defiler Bonejack.
So your list is probably just 2 Deathrippers, unless you can tweak the extra point for the Defiler from somewhere.

You need a heavy hitter unit, maybe two. Your list reminds me of what I had when I started, and I was told the same.
Now I run Bane Thralls and a Slayer at least for dealing with enemy heavies. Though I have been putting in a Seether instead.
I would swap the Satyxis for Bane Thralls + UA. They have stealth, so that is a little protection. Coupled with Tough and Dead Rise from UA it can be a changer, just don't depend on it. Also, Ghost Walk can mitigate the speed a bit.

I wouldn't bring the Soul Hunters without Wrathe. Ghostly gets you through terrain, but not through models.
The incorporeal with their charge distance and Tall in the Saddle lets them reach out quite a bit.
Wrathe's spells seem useful, but I haven't gotten the best uses from them yet. But that is my fault, not the model's

You definitely need the Skarlock. I think of him as a cheap arc node, and tend to use him to Ghost Walk the Banes early, then use him offensively after that.
If you can get Crippling Grasp on the right target, it doesn't matter if he dies after that.
Sirens are nice. I mostly use them as missiles/distraction. They can take out support models in the backfield well.
Just do not depend on their melee attack.

I haven't tried the combine yet. Once I assembly them, I plan on giving them a try.

tl:dr. Okay list, but you might want a unit or heavy jack that hits harder. Otherwise you get your assassin run and you are done.

Bam, said the lady!

As Skrulnik has said, you need some hard hitting models in that army. Lose the wiches and throw in a slayer and either a unit of banes or max mcthralls, the soulhuntes are ok for killing infantry but they won't get it done against jacks. Something like the avatar is going to shrug off any attacks you can make and just trample its way to your caster. Some of your units cost to much for small point games, I would go with somthing like this at 25 points.
Denny
2x deathripper
slayer
scarlock
max mcthralls
3x brutethrall
min baneknights
25 points and everything in the list can hit hard if need be.

Any of the above proposed lists will work. The key issue us how you want to play the game. For going straight up the center a min. unit of Bane Thralls and Tartarus, although costing a lot of points, will get the job done. Tartarus can not only bring new Bane Models into play but gives them a 10" charge against living models. If the opponent has little anti-stealth ability, they should be able to get their charge in without too much damage. If you have a few points more, add the UA. It will then give you tough and the ability to recover from knockdowns without a penalty.

Siren is a very useful solo. She is perhaps one of the most popular ones for Cryx players at the moment. One aspect that some overlook is that you can use her reach to prevent an enemy Warjack from harming your army next turn, if you can hit with her melee attack weapon. In a 25 point game where there may only be 3 or 4 turns at the most and since the first turn is usually maneuvering, this can be a game winner. She can also give a jack a focus point as mentioned. Thus she can be useful out on a flank. One other useful ability is to be able to take control of an opposing model. I have used this to have an opposing model beat up on their own Warcaster.

For flanking attacks, Soulhunters with Wrathe can be a game winner. Especially if you can get Denny's debuffs off at the right time. Their 3 attacks on the charge are reasonable and Wrathe will allow them to get into the enemy's back field without too much of a problem. The main weakness is that they can become a target sink. However, if they focus your opponents attention, then you will probably win as pDenny and an arcnode can easily kill most enemy casters.

Skarlock is another unit that is well worth adding to your army. That extra spell can take a bit of a load of Denny.

When I first started playing I had a min. unit of Soulhunters with Wrathe. Their speed allowed for some very interesting options. Remember to take the 5" light cavalry move at the end of their activation! 19" per turn on the run and the ability to hit and run using the 5" move are very useful. Ghostwalk and incorporeal will get them anywhere you want.

If you opponent tends to run a lot of infantry then you might consider Slaughterborn. This model can take out almost any debuffed infantry unit entirely.

One solo I also like to use on occasions is Bokur. He is useful for protecting Denny and can really put out a lot of damage if he stays within 6" of her.

If you take a unit of Mechanithralls, then try to fit in a Necro surgeon as well. She can make life very difficult for your opponent as it is possible for them to finish with more than they started. She can also heal Denny in a pinch! Brute thralls are a must in such a unit. I would tend to go with a minimum unit and 3 brute thralls. They really can wreck things.Their special attack can take out a debuffed caster with one swing.

The problem with Cryx is that there are so many options and most will work reasonably well. I must admit that when in doubt I just choose the models I like the most!
