I heard that in older editions of 40k, many people's armies would be made up of several different races, through an ally system. Do any older players remember this or the rules pertaining to it? It seems like a good idea to me, and I'm not quite sure why GW would get rid of it, as it means that people would be buying more codexes!

It also completely annihilates balance

The next one of you that posts about Wraiths being I2 and ignores the whip coils mentioned 2000 times a week, and I am going to devote the rest of my life to becoming an ancient space god to trick and enslave a race, and turn them into soulless T-100s to rid the entire universe of life. At that point it will have been worth it.

Nightsbane hit the nail right on the head with his post. You can still do a little bit of allying with the Daemonhunters and Witchhunters books. It creates some really nasty stuff, like mystics who let nearby units shoot deep striking enemies right next to Leman Russ Demolishers and the like.

Allying is okay if you're a starting player and you're just trying to use all your models.

The problem with it is that what invariably happens is that people take the very best thing from the other codex that just happens to do something their army is designed to be bad at.

The only new rules coming to White Dwarf are the Spearhead rules. They realized their mistake with the Blood Angels codex they had in WD, and they don't plan to repeat it.
