Subject: more IG questions, a little confused

hey there guys and girls, :-) I do have another question but we'll see how i go here, with IG if i have three ten man squads of infantry what do I need as HQ? just one HQ command? or does each squad need a HQ? I am going to be using Elysians as normal guard to start with and am buying all my army at once as I don't want to keep waiting for more stuff from FW, this is what I intend to use as my army, any help would be greatly appreciated. cheers in advance.
30 Elysian drop troops
HQ squad? (how do i use my HQ and arm?)
2x drop sentinels
tauros
tauros venator
missile teams
heavy bolter teams
mortar teams
valkyrie (not sure how to use these yet, help?)
will this be a decent enough force? I think i've got a good mix of troops enough heavy weapons to tackle SM and weapons to harass from a distance but if i'm doing anything wrong please give me a hand, i've always played SM and this is my first new army in about 8 years i've been browsing the web but haven't really found anything helpful so far.
honestly thanks for your help.

You can go about it two ways. The first is to use the squads you have as vets, in wich case you will need a company command squad, or one of the other hq slots from codex IG. This will reduce the amount of heavy weapons you will be able to use. The second way is to have a hq as before and one squad of veterans, then use the other two squads as the troops componant of a platoon, for which you will need a platoon command squad. Yhis will open up the options for more heavy weapons.
I would also recomend getting IA8, as it has updated rules for Elysians in 5th ed 40k.
Good luck

Hi there and welcome to the world of the Imperial Guard. Elysians can be used using the current IG Codex or Imperial Armor 8 (of which I don't have a copy of). I'm not sure if IA8 is used in conjunction with the IG Codex or not. Anyway, to answer some of your questions:
1) yes, you need an HQ, but not nessecarily a company command squad. You could use a Lord Commisar or a Primaris Psyker as well.
2) If you intend your 3 10 man squads to be part of a Platoon, then yes, you need to have a Platoon Command Squad. If you intend to have your 3 10 man squads be Veteran Squads, then they don't need a Platoon Command Squad to lead them, just one of the Mandatory HQ units as in answer 1. Like Captain Jack said, if you use them as a Platoon, you can use the heavy weapons squads, if not, you'll have to put your heavy weapons in the Veteran Squads, which tends to waste the heavy weapon as you need your squads to be able to move and fire.
3) Arming your command squads is entirely up to you, but here a few options I've seen on the table. A) The close combat specialists; armed with laspistols and chainswords or power weapons, these guys can intercept a potentially deadly unit before it decimates your troops, usually gets wiped out in combat but leaves the enemy stuck in the open for rapid fire revenge. B) The Long Rangers; a heavy weapons crew and a couple of grenade launchers to help bolster the line. C) The Special Weapons guys; arming the whole command squad with meltas or plasmas or what have you, especially when mounted in a Chimera. These guys can pour out the hurt. D) The mix-n-match squad; a little bit of everything, not truely effective, but feels fluffy to me. This is how I run my command squads, for example, a Platoon Command squad has Junior Officer with Bolt Pistol and Chainsword, a Vox Caster with lasgun, a Medic with lasgun, a Plasmagunner, and either a Platoon Standard with laspistol and chainsword or a Sgt with laspistol and chainsword. All my infantry squads have a vox also, as my army used to be a droptrooper army in the last codex. I wanted my officers to be in contact with all thier troops, now its just a re-roll for orders.
4) I use 3 Valkyries in my list, all part of a squadron with Vets inside with an attached Lord Commisar (as he is one of two Independant Characters in the whole codex). My Valks are armed for anti-troop (multilaser, rocket pods, heavy bolter sponsons) and do a fine job if the enemy isn't concentrating on them. Armor 12 isn't the greatest and in a skimmer, its easy to loose the whole thing to a stray missile or hydra tank. I'll normally leave them off the board and either flank them (as they are scouts!) or bring them in from my board edge normally. It kinda depends on the mission you want them to preform. I've seen the Vendetta version take out armor in droves, but again, its a skimmer and can be dropped easily.
I hope that answers some of your questions. Good luck!

You only need a single " HQ" for your entire army, but you *can* have two.
What you may be thinking of as an " HQ" is in fact a Platoon Command Squad ( PCS) - this is used when you have Platoons of normal guardsmen (i.e. BS3) and allows you Heavy Weapon squads to be taken in addition to what you have. You MUST have a PCS and a platoon has a minimum of 2 infantry squads, but can have up to 5.
If, however, you use Veteran Squads from the IG codex you *dont* have a PCS for each - they know how to order themselves about If you are looking to Elysian style they tend to favour a more Veteran army, so this is the route I would go down.
I would suggest picking up IA8 before going much furhter, as this has the specific Elysian loadouts you can use, to save you buying the wrong equipment etc.
