After reading the Dio thread (a really sad loss to the music world) it made me think about all the metalheads you always see making what they think is the sign of the devil. It always makes me smile as its actually an old way of warding off evil...

Thumb out means something else in several languages (including sign).
In spain, it can mean "cuckold".
In some sign languages, it is the "I love you" (not necessarily platonic friendship kind).
Yep, "the horns" is an old superstition hand gesture to ward off the evil spirits. Much like the salt and garlic and the rest of those trappings (and curtains for Gypsies).

Also don't forget the 60's and 70's, they also produced some great music and artists.

How does death metal link to punk? To me (an original punk back in the 70's) punk is Sex Pistols, Damned, Souxie etc a far cry from death metal. Does the US consider punk to be a different thing?

No It doesn't make you "evil" or make you have a "sick sense of humor".
Havn't listened to metal in ages.
Probably helps if one thinks horror movie imagery/atmosphere when one tries to relate to certain dm/bm-music.
I hate labels. Why can't it all just be called "metal" and leave it at that. morbid angel and iron maden have totally different styles, but they're both still just "metal" in my book.
me love the theme and story and music in the game, but the game itself got kinda boring half way through. I would have rather it was a hack & slash god of war clone instead of a wabbabe RTS

Personally, I would've rather had a Zelda clone over a God of War clone. Have to agree though, the Theme, Story, and Music were amazing, that games the reason I listen to stuff like Through the Fire and the Flames, Queen of the Masqurade, Die for Metal, and all sorts of other metal, when my friends are listening to Eminem and (c)rap.
I've never feared Death or Dying. I've only feared never Trying.

It's not that the U.S. considers punk a different thing really(well those that even know what punk is,as hip hop has conquered the air waves),I consider the Sex Pistols,Ramones,The Clash,The Stooges,to be punk bands, but of course during the 80's America had alot of "cross over" bands,Suicidal Tendencies,Cro-Mags,Agnostic Front,Corrosion of Conformity, wich while playing "punk" shows, attracted a lot of "metal" kids as well, likewise bands such as The Exploited and G.B.H,while being "punk" bands (or hardcore) also attracted a "metal" audiance.
Many Bands that started as "punk" bands crossed over, and many bands also "spawned" Thrash Metal bands...D.R.I,Angry Red Planet, etc, which also spawned Grindcore.
I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent.

Is grindcore it's own genre or is it a subgenre of Metal, Punk, Industrial, Noise or combination of?

Actually just read a book on this subject.
Grindcore comes directly out of the mid-80s UK Anarcho-Punk scene (i.e. Crass, Subhumans, Icons of Filth). Essentially bands like Napalm Death and Extreme Noise Terror started trying to play as fast as they could, using blastbeats and such. This grew into its own genre of grindcore.
Local metal scenes, especially in Florida and Stockholm took notice of this and incorporated it with their metal sound, blending the older stuff like Sabbath with grindcore, eventually de-tuning their guitars and doing the growl-like vocals. Look up a band called Nihilist if you want to hear the early grind/punk/metal fusion that became Death Metal.
In the same way, Black Metal arose in Scandinavia just after Death Metal, and to my ears, old school Black Metal (Bathory, Darkthrone) sounds a lot like punk, especially grind.
Nowadays, I would consider Extreme Metal to be its own deal, separate from punk and old school metal.
Also, FITZZ points out an important trend in the late 80s punk scene. D.R.I. affected the metal scene a lot when they went crossover. Other bands like GBH and Discharge had pretty awful crossover efforts.
