Hi all,

I'd really appreciate some comments on the following list which I am planning to take to a tournamant at the end of May:

HQ
Pedro Kantor

Darnath Lysander

Elites
Sternguard Squad A
(10) 4x Combi-Melta, Power Fist; Drop Pod

Sternguard Squad B
(5) 2x Lascannons; Rhino

Dreadnought
2x TL Autocannons; Drop Pod

Troops
Tactical Squad A
(10) Plasmagun, Plasma Cannon, Power Weapon; Rhino

Tactical Squad B
(5) Power Weapon; Razorback w. TL Lascannon

Fast Attack
Landspeeder Typhoon
Heavy Bolter, Typhoon Launcher

Landspeeder Typhoon
Heavy Bolter, Typhoon Launcher

Heavy Support
Thunderfire Cannon

Pedro will sit at the back in the Rhino with the 5 man Sternguard unit in it, making them considerably more deadly as a home base defence unit and, along with the bulk of the rest of the force, will rain fire down upon the opponent. Lysander will go in the Drop Pod with the 10 man Sternguard unit making them my main hammer unit, though I will not necessarily be dropping them directly in the face of my opponent as there is little that can move quickly to support them. The idea is more to whittle down the enemy with heavy long range supporting fire and drop the Sternguard Pod in to mop up. But if they come in too early in the game they can drop in midfield and lend weight to the firepower and advance a bit more slowly with some mechanied Tac Squads to back them up.

Imo, the Dread with AC's shouldn't be in a drop pod, he should be in your backfield. I'm not sure what to think of the 5-man Sternguard unit.

I like the idea of the army but I'm not yet convinced it'll work.

You are correct, the Dread only has a Pod so that I can drop it empty in turn 1 and am not forced to deploy the 10-man Sternguard unit into the face of a massed mech force. I will at least get two turns of shooting before my opponent can retalliate on my podded Sternguard and hopefully they should have some recently "unpacked" troops to marmalize.

With regards to the 5-man Sternguard unit, they are scoring, they have 2 Lascannons, they sit in a Rhino for cover and have Pedro with them granting 24 attacks on the charge (including Pedro), which is better than a 10-man Tactical Squad. They are slightly more fragile only being 5 strong but I think they'll do quite well.

Why is Lysander in the army? For the points you spend on him you could get another 2-3 speeders or another couple of TF cannons, both of which are much more useful.

While you sleep, they'll be waiting...

Have you thought about the Axis of Evil pension scheme?

I'd take one of these HQ's.
In fact, I'd take one of them and possibly add a Librarian with nullzone.

I did consider a Librarian and adding perhaps another speeder or TFC but I always find Librarians to be underwhelming. They are great on paper but (like Blood Talons) just haven't lived up to my expectations. Also I only have 1 TFC model and the thought of building another one does not fill me with joy, though they are awesome on the table

Even though he is expensive I do think Lysander is worth his points in this list, bolter drill combined with Sternguard is very deadly indeed and he's just a beast in combat. I can't see an opponent being able to ignore him when dropped into the midst of his lines.

Well, I stuck with the list and finished joint 18th out of 70 players which I was pretty happy with. I drew my first game against a Daemons list. Had a minor loss (2 kill point difference) in game 2 vs a modified IG Leaf-Blower and scored a massacre against a vanilla marine list in game 3. Lysander and the Thunderfire cannon worked out as my best units by far.

The tournament was won by a Nid player and Daemons filled out the Top 5 and featured heavily in the top 15. I was the second highest placed C:SM Marine player with a Blood Angels and Space Wolf player also placing in the top 15.
