Looking for something to help me get over my disappointment of eternal guard. When I compare them to the other elf guards (phoenix and black), they suck. Why do they suck? and Why should I take them in my army? (other than they are cool models)

How would you guys make them more competitive? Give them some way to get ASF, like the rest of the elves? Give them longbows? Make them stubborn without a noble or ItP? Any ideas?

I don't mean to rant , I just want a better reason to buy those cool models.

They do get to fight in two ranks like spears as long as they didn't just charge. They also are considered to fight with two hand weapons in the front rank. However, I don't see where their strength would be 5 for those attacks.

My problem is that I keep comparing them to phoenix guards who get one str.4 attack, but get 5+ AS, 4+ ward save, ASF, and cause fear (did I miss anything, not sure of cost either) and black guard that have 2 str. 4 attacks, are ItP, stubborn, warrior elite (reroll all failed to hit rolls), 5+ AS, and always take the ASF banner for only 13points/model. Those other elf guards are awesome compared to eternal guard. Granted they are awesome compared to most infantry, with T3 their biggest weakness, but somewhat lessened by ASF.

Erm, hate to be "that guy" but newer books better stuff.

Once Woodies get updated, I'm sure they'll be fine.

Unfortunately, it will just add to the powercreep. Maybe they will have army wide scout rule, all units will have glade guard longbows (or lasguns), and skirmishing units can stop rank bonuses with flank or rear charges. Or maybe a "force of nature" spell that causes d6 wounds to every enemy unit on the board. It is a shame that GW seems to think the way to fix armies is making them more powerful. Will it ever stop? Sorry ranting again not even sure why

Coolest models ever... and perhaps they'll be more useful in 8th edition with ranked infantry supposedly getting a boost? However, their ability to become stubborn may be more common if some rumors are true...

I don't know, I've heard they have a place in some wood elf lists, but they don't fit my theme so I've never tried em... worth it just for the models, though

Well, i personally like Eternal Guard, sure i probably wont run more then one block of them, but they do have alot of good stuff other gaurds do not get, (btw if the blackgaurd take their "named" gaurd for 75 points, they are unbreakable) But Wood EG get 2 attacks each because of the special stalves, and if they are in the back rank they get spears, so i belive EG get more attacks then the other Gaurds, and with a Highborn/noble they become stubborn, so if you run a big block they can do good things

True they get more attacks if they are charged or second round of combat due to spears. However, they are only strength 3. They only become stubborn if you spend the points on a noble.

I know black guard can become unbreakable for 75 points more. (See the difference already, for 75 points eternal guard become stubborn) Black Guard are already stubborn and Immune to Psychology with leadership 9, that is already pretty good, why bother spending the extra 75 points. They also have 2 str. 4 attacks per model with warrior elite (reroll misses every round). Then they always take the banner of ASF.

I am not familiar enough with HE to be sure about anything, but I think they get only one str. 4 attack. However, they last longer because they have a 5+ AS and a 4+ ward save, along with causing fear. Oops, they also have ASF.

It just seems to me that their is no contest between these units. #1 = Black Guard, #2 = Phoenix Guard, and last Eternal Guard.

I understand that EG are still decent just not on par with the other elf guards. It doesn't matter though, I am still going to pick up the models. They are too cool not to have. I just want another reason to use them. (My painting skills will not do them justice, so I was hoping their in-game skills would compensate. )
