Having seen some of the insane new GW (Australia) prices, I've decided to drop the hobby for now and get started with Warmachine. I like the idea of a game where I don't need dozens of overpriced models to play. I've looked through all of the armies, and I've gone with Menoth (fire=guaranteed fun).
I put in an order at my FLGS for Severius (so I can build my army from the top down), but I'm not familiar enough with the system to know what would be most effective. What's an effective build centered around Severius? I took a hint from his artwork and ordered some Temple Flameguard, but I don't know what else would work well.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

i recently started menoth as well. looking for something similar to my khador yet different enough to be, well....different. i like how they play and they share alot of the strengths of Khador including tough jacks and hitty casters.
i am interested in picking up severius in leu of my normal face smashers reznik and eKreoss. i would recommned any of the folowing with him:
revenger/blessing of vengeance - arc nodes work well with casty type warcasters like sevvy.
hierophant - getting spells out cheaper plus healing in a pinch is always good
choir of menoth - good in general for menoth and usually always seen on the table. see also vassal of menoth and covenant of menoth.
thats all i can really add, as i painted models based on looks.
enjoy the fire/live to burn

I've spoken to a few people and looked around forums, and I've noticed a fair few Menoth players are fond of Redeemers. Chain weapon+flamethrower looks like a nice combo for clearing out infantry.

no chain weapon on the redeemer. maybe you mean repenter? chain weapon is cute but it doesnt give you more attacks in combat unless you buy them and that goes for most jacks.
the vanquisher is a heavy warjack with a very decent gun that will set models on fire even if it doesnt damage them, it has thresher on it's chain weapon. this means he can make an attack against all models within .5 inches of it.
the repenter is a cheap flame thrower that can clear out chaff troops. i dont have one, but im looking at one when the plastics come in.
the redeemer is a choice light warjack. i bond one to epic feora, but sevvy has the focus to feed one if you feel the need. for me though i find sevvy to be a bit greedy with his focus so i prefer to be jack light with him. in a 35 pointer i wun the blessing and the avatar, at 50 i add a revenger for more arc node goodness.

Derp, yes, I meant the Repenter. Severius can boost its flamethrower, so it looks like one of the top choices for clearing out infantry.
What should I take for my heavy 'jacks? Crusaders are cool and get an open fist, but I'm told Templars are good at taking punishment thanks to their shields.

Depends on what you want.
Crusaders are cheap for what they do.
Templars pay an extra 2 points to have chain weapon, beat back and a shield.

AND reach, which adds to his threat range. Reach is the seller for me. i always look for jacks with reach first when looking at beater jacks.
and while severius can boost the flamethrower shots on the repenter, remember that its one focus PER MODEL to hit, since you still need to spend focus to boost hits on each model. say the repenter lays down its spray and has 4 models underneath it. lets say that the models are satyxis raiders for instance. DEF 14 on the raiders, RAT 5 on the repenter. you need 9's to hit each raider. using focus to boost hits is an option, but since jacks normally only get 3 focus max each turn, thats the potential to boost only 3 shots.
an alternative to this is the vanquisher, who only needs to hit one of the raiders, so normally one focus to boost the initial shot will snag your the hit on average rolls. now everyone under his AOE is affected. the model who was directly hit is prolly dead outright, and the other raiders take the blast damage. even if you fail to kill them with the blast damage, they are on fire and will most lilely die during the maintance phase. keep in mind this specific example will rarely happen since most people using satyxis will have the sea witch with them which makes them harder to hit against ranged attacks, and makes them immune to blast damage, but not the fire.

Nah, between Choir and Eye of Menoth, a Repenter is hitting at RAT 8. There's no need to give
it focus to hit anything.

Kinda hi-jacking....do you guys think starting out with eGaspy is a bad idea?
I'm tight on cash, but don't really like the Caster and Jack in the starter box. I mean, I can envision my future usage of them, but they don't float my boat.
As crazy as it sounds I'm not digging the Jacks 'too' much compared to cryx infantry...and eGasp seems like an infantry man.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

You should check out the PP forum as there is a great deal of info on e-gaspy. He is exceptionally good with soulhunters because of his feat. They are very expensive models though. He is still very good without them as well!
