hey dakka, after using gw's white undercoat and realising its nothing like the chaos black finish, would there be any other products that have same/better finishes?

What specifically was the problem with it, other then color? I'd need to know that before suggesting alternatives.

Primers aren't really supposed to be like paints, if you prime a mini with chaos black and you want it to stay black, you need to go over it with the black paint. It's not really fun, but if you don't it will stand out.

Same with white, the primers have different properties to the paints, and so the finish is not exactly the same.

If you mean a grainyness, then it might be too cold where you are spraying them, you might be too far away etc. The black is a lot more forgiving, as you can't see as much.

I prefer black, so I don't have too much trouble shading. The GW Chaos Black spraycan works fine for me, though I got it like, half empty.

Ive been using Kyron Matte or Flat White with great effect (really inexpensive paint available at stores like Walmart). remember to build up the color with thin coats, dont try to get it all done in one go, or you will "glop" on the paint and lose detail.

Is Krylon white is safe for plastics? I'd been thinking of getting the Wal-mart $1 spray paints but had heard they melt plastics. Anyone know for sure?

the krylon white that i bought did not melt my plastics. i don't know anything about the 99cent walmart paint.

others i know use krylon black primer and that's why i tried krylon white in the first place.

not to hijack, but what is the best way to get an even coat when spraying. i am pretty lame at it.

1.) Set your stuff to be painted up on newspaper/cardboard/whatever. It should have been washed and dried and sanded and de-mold-lined by now.

2.) You should be in a non-windy, well ventilated area. It should not be humid and the paint should be room temperature. Painting in cold, humid conditions like a cold, damp basement can lead to the paint "fuzzing" for lack of a better word.

3.) Shake the can for at least 60 seconds, making sure to "swirl" the bottom a lot like a hula hoop, as well as inverting it.

4.) Holding the can approx 12 inches from the target, start spraying off target, make a smooth pass - neither fast nor slow - and stop painting off the target.

5.) To re-iterate, You should never be pressing or releasing the trigger/button while over the target mini. Start before it, release off it.

6.) You should make no more then 3 smooth passes, dusting it gently.

7.) Remember always that it's far, far easier to add more paint later then to strip/sand/clean otherwise repair a drippy, gobby mess.

8.) And above all, remember: no one started off good at this. It takes practice.

so again, what was the problem with the primer?
