Smack you friend upside the head, there is nothing that prevents this. It's an Independent character joining a unit that consists of more then one model, so perfectly legal. The unit will move at the slowest speed available to any model in the unit and in close combat the Captain can be singled out jsut like any other IC.
Refer to page 48 of the BRB for the guidelines of an independent character joining a unit.

Rotting Sorcerer of Nurgle

I remember this one which was tried to pull on me.
Tau Hammerhead submunition.
It hits a bunch of space marines...because it is str 6 it reduces armor by 3 making it a 6+ armor save and because it was AP 4 it would bypass armor.
Ahh, the funny kids that mix WFB rules and 40K rules...

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

That was rather unnecessary. The last Marine codex had a restriction that prevented power-armoured characters from taking Terminator command squads. This was rather commonly mistakenly interpreted to mean that these characters couldn't join Terminator squads.
And anyone who has been playing this game for any length of time shouldn't be too surprised by how long odd remnant rules can stick around.
