Hi All,
A few situations cropped up in my latest battle, and I was wondering if you could help.

1. A non-fearless Independent Character is joined to a non fearless unit. Said unit is gunned down in the shooting phase by standard weaponary, the IC survives with all wounds intact. Does he check morale and revert to being an unattatched IC, or just become an unattatched IC without having to check morale? Does the same apply to pinning weapons? What would happen if the IC takes a wound during the gunning down of his squad?
Would this make a difference? Would an IC on his own check morale or pinning if wounded?

2. A unit with two blast weapons engages an enemy unit which is behind another enemy unit.
Do they get a cover save from the unit in front?

3. If the squad with the blast weapons targetted the front squad, would the rear squad recieve a cover save if the blast scattered backwards into them?

4. Is it possible for two blast markers placed in the same place on an enemy unit to kill more models than are covered? e.g. a squad of destroyers is hit by two plasma cannon shots which cover the same for models twice causing 8 wounds. Are these four unlucky necrons simply killed twice each or do the extra wounds get allocated to destoyers who were not under the blast, but in the same unit? The 40k rulesbook seems to read that all blasts should be worked out at the same time.

5. Can necrons who arrive through a monolith portal from reserve perform an 'emergency disembarkation' from the monolith if the portal is blocked by enemy models?

Thanks in advance.

1) The IC does not test. A Non Fearless IC who joins a Fearless unit gains the Fearless USR so long as he is part of the unit. IC's can only Join and Leave units within their own movement Phase, so he will keep the Fearless USR until his next movement phase, as he will only then no longer be joined to that unit.
2) Yes.
3) Yes.
4) All blasts do is determine how many hits you get. It does not decide WHO gets hit. That is determined by Wound Allocation. So in that example, you caused 8 Hits. If you then caused 7 Wounds with your rolling, 7 Saves would be made (if possible) and 1 model removed for each failed save.
5) Yes.

1. The IC is part of the unit until the ICs next movement phase, therefore has to check morale.

2. If the unit in front blocks LOS to 50% of the members of the unit then you get a cover save. The exception is when using barrage wweapons, when LOS is traced from the centre of the blast.

3. Yes, as above. LOS is still worked out from the firing model to where the shot lands.

4. Models can be removed from anywhere in the unit, so in your example yes you can kill up to 8 models from the 8 wounds.

5. Yes,

It would make no difference whether the IC takes a wound or not. Although the rules are a little unclear as to what happens when the unit is destroyed. Some assume that he must take the test because he technically can not leave the unit until his next movement phase... so is still a part of the unit at that point. Some assume that he becomes an IC the moment his unit is destroyed.

To my mind, even if he immediately becomes an IC again, his unit still suffered casualties that phase, so a test is required.

If the firer's LOS passes through the front unit, yes.

3. If the squad with the blast weapons targetted the front squad, would the rear squad recieve a cover save if the blast scattered backwards into them?

As above.

Blast markers tell you how many models are hit, not which models are hit. If you have two markers each hitting covering 4 models, 8 models are hit.

5. Can necrons who arrive through a monolith portal from reserve perform an 'emergency disembarkation' from the monolith if the portal is blocked by enemy models?

Entering through the portal is treated as disembarking from a vehicle... so yes.

I can't answer all, but I'll attempt the ones that I think I know:

1. IC's only become unattached during the movement phase by moving more than 2" from the unit they were attached to. This occured in the shooting phase, so, even though the unit doesn't exist anymore, the IC is still attached to it and has to fall back. However, at the beginning of your next movement phase, he automatically rallies because he is no longer within 2" of the unit he was attached to. IC's taking wounds won't check morale because the rule asks for casualties. I believe a pinning weapon would function the same way.

2. Yes, they get a cover save.

3. I play that they would, and I believe the rules support this as well.

4. Absolutely. In fact, if you read the blast marker/template rules it tells you that the casualties can come from anywhere in the unit, not just the ones covered. So, you fire all of your marker/template weapons, count up the total number of models affected, fire any other weapons, and then roll to wound together (using separate dice).

5. I don't know, so I won't even attempt.

Thanks very much, thats largely my view. The IC testing morale makes sense in the first example.

Gwar! - I think you may want to check your answer - it was a non-fearless IC *and* a non-fearless unit.

Woops!

I read it as a Non Fearless IC Joining a Fearless unit. My bad! In that case the IC would test!
