I've been tossing this idea around in my head for a new necron army, painting them to look like they're all rusted and stuff, using tons of weathering with powders and all that fancy stuff, probably working toward a 1000 pt goal at first. It would still take me a really long time to paint them all and the idea is I would be finishing up the regular troops and stuff when the new codex and models come out and then I can add in the new units too. I would probably not be playing with the army till the new book comes out since it will take so long to build and stuff. So, is now a good time to start? There's dozens of rumors floating around about a dozen different armies, so i just dunno when necrons are really supposed to be redone.. I don't wanna wait for 2 years..

I don't think it'll be bad to start now. I always say that unless it's been confirmed by GW themselves don't trust any rumors. I really doubt that 'Crons will be that different than they are now anyway. I've heard (hopefully not true) that they are going to change WWBB to FNP, other than that I haven't heard anything specifically changing 'Crons.

My opinion is start the army you want to, 1k points isn't a lot and it's not liek you'll be dumping a lot of money into the project. Just start small and put your all into everything. When the new book comes out (whenever it may be) you'll find a way to make it work.

It's never a good time to start Necrons. When they get a new codex, maybe, but right now they're neither competitive nor fun to play. They're also really, really dull to fight. You'll likely get bored very fast.

Go ahead, but keep in mind they might get a codex next year.

If you want to play necrons, I would get them now, start getting a feel for them, and start taking your lumps. If you can win with such a "gimped" codex, once you get a valid one you would truely be a C'Tan.

Of course, like SRM said, Non of the people in my gaming group really enjoyed playing against the Necrons, and they lacked the options of the other armies.

I've never feared Death or Dying. I've only feared never Trying.

Inside a pretty, pretty pain cave... won't you come inside?

Given that they WILL be redone, it's just when, it's hard to recommend starting them up when they could get completely revamped. That being said, you could probably focus on core units that likely won't go away, such as warriors, Immortals, etc., so that when the new codex comes out, you'll have a better chance of having stuff you can still use.

Now would be a good time to start collecting if it's something you really want to do. Look for good deals on used/unwanted Necron stuff and slowly build up your supply. It's a lot cheaper collecting an army over a year or two than it is buying 1500 points in a couple of weeks.

As far as modelling them goes, that's a bit harder. Without knowing what's going to be good or poor in the codex, it's hard to know what weapon loadouts to pick. Might be worth your while to just strip all those used minis and get them prepped for painting, or else maybe start magnetizing everything.

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

Observations on complex unit wound allocation: If you're feeling screwed, your opponent is probably doing it right.

Well, we aren't exactly a good army... No idea when a new dex will be out.

As for what you should take? Destroyers are good. Heavy Destroyers are good. Lord is good. Pariahs are bad. Pretty much everything else is pretty vaguely okay. But you said you're going to try to wait for the next dex... Probably going to take forever. I'd wait until at least late in this year, since there's more rumors about DE and GK.

Oh, one more thing: Necrons are REALLY bad for pinning and magnetizing (Although it's not like we have options to magnetize). Thin spindly arms and all that.

I had a 2000ish pt necron army at one point, back when they redid them the last time, but I actually got bored with the army and sold it to some nice fella in Sweden for $600

But I've always loved the look and the models and I'm looking at this army as more of a modeling project then an army to play because 1) the models look cool and I wanna paint them and 2) I rarely play, I think in the last year I've played a whole 2 games.

Anyway, since the codex is getting redone "soon" I figured I would start with basic units and just paint them up and get them ready, and then when the new models & rules come out I'll have a good foundation to continue building upon. I thought I'd start with a battleforce (or 2?) as that seems like a good deal for the units I know I want anyway, and I figure they're unlikely to change model-wise. if I got 2 battleforces, it would probably take me a good 6 months to finish painting all that.

Somewhere.

Look on the bright side...when the new, hideously powerful 'Crons Codex comes lurching out of the darkness no one can claim you're hoping on the band wagon. You suffered through the suck, so now you deserve the awesome firepower they suddenly own!

It's one of the reasons I'm doing 'Crons, and part of why I'm the sole player of Grey Knights in a sea of unpainted Blood Angels at the local GW...so many claim they've had the armies for years, the rules just sucked, yet there are no old Death Company units nor a speck of anything but basecoat.

Personally, I had more fun painting my Necrons than the Space marines. They sure are an intimidating sight when you've got them all painted and lined up. Grab a battleforce, make each warrior a work of art, then when a new codex finally shows up you'll be ready to harvest all the souls unlucky enough to stand against you

I would avoid getting any immortals at the moment as they:
A) pretty much have one pose
B) are HELLA expensive
C) metal models... <shudder>
D) one of the big draws for the new codex is the rumored plastic immortals

If you're looking for a project to tide you over till the codex and not worried about a competative list, then i'd say you're idea is a solid one and to give it a go!

Well, Necrons are very hard to play. Personally, I believe the rumours that the cron 'dex will be out next January or thereabouts. So far January has always been about Xenos of some sort... atleast for me.

Anyway, I'm working on my own fandex if you feel like playtesting, it's my "bridge" between 3rd ed codex and the possible 5th ed codex.

Good luck if you do start them up.

It's a good time. I did what your doing now. No regrets at all.

I say go for it.

Keep in mind, Necrons are hard to win with. Alot of suckage to suffer threw (gameing). Models are fun to paint though, and bad ass fluff.

I'd go for it. There are always rumors flying around about which codex and model line is getting the next update and what not. I've not collected some armies for years at a time, waiting for what rumors say "will be very soon". Just collect them I'd say. Use your old models with some new. Necrons look good anyway, so while some models will be updated, the old ones will still look pretty awesome fielded.

Once I get my lizards done (hopefully soon) I'll pick up a battleforce and start painting them up in between other projects.

I did a quickie list with army builder just to add up points and 2 battleforces plus a lord and monolith will be almost 1700 pts., so I wouldn't need to add a whole lot more to get up to 2k. Maybe I'd try to convert my own immortals out of warriors and just make the guns be double decker barrels.

If you want Necrons, get Necrons. They don't suck as much as the elitists say. It's usually the players who suck. And the elitists are usually SM tools, so their opinions are automatically invalidated.

The only thing I can recommend is for variety/more fun, go higher than 1000 pts. A lord and 2 Warrior Troops alone is 500 pts. If you want to avoid Phase Out in 1000 pt games, there isn't much room for variety - just stack Warriors or Destroyers or Immortals. However, this can get dull or repetitive w/o any C'Tan or Monolith.

My 2 FLGS actually have quite a few Necron players, but it's always good to see more Necron players across the globe!!

I play a 1000pt with just Warriors and Destroyers. I think the Destroyers are awesome so i definatly recommend gettin some of those.

Im just kind of stuck at the minute though as id love to get some Immortals or Flayed Ones but they just cost way to much! £8 a pop for something you need like 8 of is a big cost for not much in my eyes. Never the less i have loads of fun with my army and iv always had a laugh frustrating the hell out of whoever iv played against with WBB roles!

I was just thinking 1000 pts, because it's easier for me to build in stages so I am for a 1000 pt army first then build upon it. If not I have tons of sprues piled up and a feeling like I'll never finish em

Necrons are probably my favorite army and I have plenty of fun with them. Good generals can still win with them despite their low ranking on the tiers of competitive armies. And I actually like the monotony of appearance and wargear, and hope they can improve the army without making them full of upgrade options like everyone else. If you choose to start them up, the Battleforce Box is a Really great deal.

I always liked Necrons too. But I think I have every Codex for 40K and as much as you try and be open-minded, it's really obvious they are lacking in terms of competitive play and options.

That said, I also thought of going rust-colored on Necrons! Just because they self-repair doesn't mean they repaint themselves And I think they would be a lot more frightening. Besides warriors I think their cool-looking models are Wraiths and Flayed Ones, neither of which are bad units IMHO.
