I believe " Anything At All Costs" is full of FAIL.
NO SPORTSMANSHIP. NO PAINTING. NO RULES JUDGES WILL BE PRESENT. SATANIC WORSHIP MAY OR MAY NOT GO ON IN THE BACK ROOM. Your prize is a cookie, that the tournament organizer has taken a piss on, to ensure it is contaminant-free (go NH3).

I agree with this.
But I might sign up for that tournament. It might not be fun, but it will probably be vastly entertaining.

A damn expensive hobby not to enjoy either!
It's supposed to be fun, however you cut it, if it stops being anything more then just fun, something is very wrong!

The question is not whether or not you should be giving 100%, the question is "what's your priority?" I've never played in a tournament, and when I go to one, my objective will not be to win; it will be to have fun with an army that I enjoy.
I play Orks. I didn't choose to play Orks because I heard they're a strong army, I chose to play Orks because I like their flavor, I like their fluff, I think they're funny. I play a Kan-Wall army, not because it's a winning army, but because I like how it plays.
You go in to have a good time; you let people slide on distances, line of sight, the rules (to an extent) and you enjoy yourself. I'm going to tournaments, literally to establish myself in the 40k community and make friends with people who have an interest in my hobby, learn more about the game, and enjoy myself. If at any point I discover I'm not having fun, I'll stop. That's all.

Warpcrafter - Hobbyist At All Costs - from a parody rant posted on here recently. Reaver83 - I agree completely, I'm the same. What you can't do is expect or demand everyone else to be the same way. I like a tough game with a tough list but if I'm playing a game against a newbie with two battleforce boxes it's not right to crush him with my hardest list and say "he needs to step his game up". It's equally unfair for someone to bring their favourite weaksauce fluff list if I've explicitly requested a hard-as-nails game. All of which can be summed up with saying that you should ensure your priorities and expectations mesh with those of people you're interacting with and then everyone will have a good time. TL;DR - Communicate and don't be a dick!

This. The problem is expecting people to enjoy the hobby the exact same way that you do, and getting upset when they don't. You see a LOT of this in threads bemoaning ' WAAC players are killing the game,' one of the things that spawned the ' HAAC players are killing the game' parody thread.

NO.
The OP just said that you're a jerkface if you get bent out of shape when other people don't conform to your expectations, it didn't really seem to argue against the idea that the hobby is the only thing that matters out of miniatures, or that the game is all that matters. I'm not seeing that he really said what you guys seem to think he said.
Or I could just be unsure of what you think he said. Either or.

Thanks, Scott-S6. I have jokingly referred to myself as part of the casual gamer mafia just to get under the skin of some obvious TFG, but that's not really true. I have gotten used to being beat more often than not, because of my tendency to constantly fiddle with my list for no better reason than sheer boredom. There will always be some dufus with an emo haircut, coke-bottle glasses and a reproduction rugby jersey sitting off to the side making smartass remarks about your list and tactical choices. They may even be right one in awhile, but for every time they are right, you want to make them eat their teeth because for the umpteenth time they remark "What? No Nob bikers?" I have become skilled at pretending that they don't exist, which is best for everyone. Never give a douchebag the time of day, I say, and perhaps one day they will learn.

The problem with HAAC and WAAC types (the ones that cause the problems, at least) is not that they're focused on fluff/painting or on winning but that they expect everyone else to be the same and bitch when they're not. What the article said was associate with like-minded people or compromise. In the two examples I gave you either don't play those games or one (or both) of you shifts your expectation of the game and acts accordingly. Any time you only have two choices, both are wrong and the third one you haven't thought of yet is the way to go. The correct option in this case is "don't be a dick."

"Don't be a dick" is always the correct option. Wil Wheaton said it so it must be true.
