here goes

captain- 130
power weapon
artificer armor

command squad- 130
company champion

tac squad- 170
+ 5 models
flamer
heavy bolter*

scout squad-75

venerable dreadnought- 205 pts
twin linked lascannon
missle launcher

assault marines- 130 pts?( dont have my codex on hand and cant remember if the flamer is free or 5 pts...)
plasma pistol
power weapon
flamer

devastators -150 pts
missle launchers x4

total... 990? (its either this or like 10 more point witch still keeps me under 1000)

*the heavy bolter is optional depending on the role of my space marine squad

This is a rough draft so it is subject to changes
I have play-tested this list twice. the first game was against faith sisters where I drew, though I would have won if there had only been five turns. The second game was against khorne flakes and i got destroyed, though I wasn't 100% present during the second game( my mind was elsewhere, and I didnt deploy well)

Drop the command squad, the are overpriced and not worth it.

Instead of the heavy bolter take a missle launcher

A normal dread is cheaper as a shooty option then a vnereable, you dont really need the additional BS with twin linked weapons

5 assult marines are worthless IMHO, play them in full squads of 10 with just a flamer and a power sword on the sargent.

IMO again, either another shooty dread or a predature is much more effective then devastators.

Burn up your extra poijnts with melta bombs or some combi weapons or digital weapons on the captian

The command squad is an old favorite of mine, but I have questioned its worth

The heavy bolter could be swapped out for a missle launcher quite easily its situational IMO

As to the venerable dread, I take the venerable because I like the added security for the only tank in my list, there is a reason he hasn't died yet and its most certainly not because he has higher ballistic skill.

I see your point on the assault marines, and I have considered ditching them for another squad of tac marines. Or possibly ditching the command squad and strengthening they're numbers

the devastators have proven there worth (to me at least) on many occasions, and I have always been one to take infantry over tanks. Plus I think people under rate missle launchers

drop the command squad (yes even though it's a fav... i had to do it too)
and the scout squad.
Replace with another 10man Tac squad.
instead of assault marines, take 5 or 6 stern guard. you should have few point left over for a combi-weapon or two as well.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
btw your original assualt squad is illegal.... unless i'm missing something? for every five you get a choice of plasma OR flamer. unless you are giving the Plsma Pstol to the serg, in which case your squad is at 140pts.

Just to throw this out there, for the 205 points your paying for the venerable dread you could replace it with a normal dread for 125 points, leaving you with 80 points left, take those 80 points and the points you have extra and you can run a predator with an AC and Heavy Bolter sponsones. Dont get me wrong I love dreads, my normal 1500 point list runs 5 of them but I just can justify the point cost on a venerable dread.

Ok, so I have been toying around with the idea of upgrading my captain to a chapter master and bringing honor guard (if i get rid of the Command Squad and the Assault Marines), but I'm not sure. My reasoning for this is that honor guard are beasts on paper, but I have never actually used em I also think they can fill the role of the command squad and the assault marines as well as guard my HQ if they have to... Thoughts?

revised list might look somewhat like this

chapter master

honor guard

tac squad

tac squad

dreadnought

devastators

again I am speculating to point costs because I dont have my book on me

Ok.... first thoughts, you are increasing the cost of your HQ... and not getting much in return.
while the honor guard are cool, you only get 3 marines for the same cost as 5 from the command squad.
in this small of an army, these squads are over priced.
Keep the captain.
ditch the command/honor guard.
get sternguard squad.
in small games Sternguard are worth their weight in gold.

the other step would be play with these options and see what you like best.
