Hey guys,

I was wondering why rule editions are continually released... unlike PC games which are patched or expanded on, I can't see why the core rulebook needs updating/replacing.

I've only played 5th edition, but is it likely we'll see a 6th edition? A 7th? Other than making money, what's the point? Chess hasn't seen a 2nd edition

to balance out aspects and to change parts to make the game fresh, and most importantly, TO MAKE MORE MONEY!!!! $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
( say, do british keyboards have a "pound" symbol instead of a dollar sign?)

We'll get a 6th edition, that's without doubt. What it has within or when it will come out is completely unknown though. They generally release a new edition every 5-6 years or so though, so I wouldn't worry about it until then.

To make money & it's easier to re-release rules with table top then constantly update F.A.Q's.

I mean do you really want to carry around a 20+ page long patch notes booklet in addition to the core rule book? With video games you can just re-write the files to implement fixes so it's much easier & you can be sure everyone is on the same set.

Trade rules: lower rep trades ships 1st. - I ship within 2 business days, if it will be longer I will contact you & explain. - I will NOT lie on customs forms, it's a felony, do not ask me to mark sales as "gifts". Free shipping applies to contiguous US states.

Yes they do on the 3 key.

Anyhoo, I feel me question hasn't quite been answered... I mean, this is all just generalisations What's wrong with 5thed? I guess the codex creep is part of this but really they shouldn't move along until every faction gets a new 'dex.

It looked a lot more rapid on wiki :(

I don't think he meant the # pound, but rather the £ pound?

Been out of the game for awhile, trying to find time to get back into it.

Changes don't come around because there's something wrong. They come because it's time to change. The game has changed significantly since it's first incarnation.

Examples:
-Character Hammer of 2nd edition
-Army size increase- More models needed per edition
-Percentage based army building to the current FOC
-Mechtastic 5th
-Points cost dropping across armybooks- 6 pt Orks and 35 pt Rhinos allowing for more minis in the same sized games.

Note, WFB, started percentage based and moved to the FOC model and is rumored to be going back to percentages. WFB's FOC has been viewed as superior to 40k's, by some, due to the way it scales up for larger games.

I think it's a tad early for worries of 40K 6th, but rest assured, they are coming.

If my OP included the statement, 'So I'm completely ignorant of this topic," my first action would be, 'Hmm, perhaps I should become less ignorant before attempting to construct an argument, but... how?' Do you really not know anyone who has earlier edition of the rules you can read? Perhaps familiarizing yourself with the previous editions would help answer your question. For example, I've got a copy of "White Dwarf Presents: Warhammer 40,000" which includes rules that let you use vehicles in your 40K games, and tells you how to calculate trajectory arcs so you can determine how far vehicles move when they turn. The rules were a lot more complex and crunchy back then, but the direction player preference was moving in was bigger forces, which made stuff like that unwieldy. One of the things that drives edition change is meeting player's shifting preferences. It's not like plotting the flowcharts to determine behavior of Imperial and Chaos robots was bad, or wrong, but I really don't miss it.
Chess hasn't seen a 2nd edition

Which just shows that you don't know much about chess either.

Actually, chess evolved continuously over a a period of around 1,000 years.

The rules for 40K are changed because 40K is not that sophisticated a game, the basic strategies are fairly direct and have little subtlety, and while this means a new player can pick the game up fairly quickly, it also means that the game become stale over time. Changing the rules makes the game different, maybe brings a bit of interest back.

It is basically change for change's sake, but the point most people are missing is that paying for a new rulebook once every five years makes for an interesting game.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

If there was a new rulebook with improvements such as clarity indexing ordering diagrams properly worded examples I would pay for it, evey year if needs be as long as I get something *new*.

"£" is above the 3, "$" above 4, and our """ is in the proper place, above the 2

The tilde (~) key has "#" on it.

US and UK keyboards are similar, but some annoying differences - """ being shifted is anoying when typing on my other jhalfs Mac, I keep putting the wrong symbol in...

We're missing the Yen symbol to make room.

British keyboards have a £ sign on the 3 and a $ sign on the 4. My keyboard also has a Euro sign on the 2 but I don't know how to make it work. I understand that Americans call the hash sign (#) the pound.

Yes, you are right, GW will release a new edition in a couple of years because it resets the entire game and stimulates a new wave of model and codex buying. Each new codex in turn stimulates sales of the models for that army.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

That's funny, mine is on the 4.

Anyway, to make that work, you have to press Alt Gr + 4 (or 2 it seems for you). It's the same for the | symbol on the ` or ¬ key.

But IIRC, there was a sort of understanding that GW would get their bloody act together and have all the codexes updated to 5th edition before making a 6th edition rulebook, though knowing GW, they probably forgot and are currently thinking on how to givwe Space Marines special rules for Space Corridors.
