Autocannons had top-loading box magazines back then (so did the IG heavy weapon team ones).

You're not going crazy. It was yet another reason for me not to collect CSM even then (bug-fething-ugly models)

I used to search out places to get OOP pieces for IG, it helped to build my Tanith 101st, very patch work.
