Just a quick question regarding my idea for a unit of Spirit Hosts and their legality for tournaments.

Basically, I want to use the Ringwraith models from The Lord of the Rings for my Spirit Hosts- I know you are allowed to include parts from other GW games in your army and they will still be legal for GW tournaments, BUT can you make an ENTIRE unit out of nothing BUT models from another GW game and still play them in a tournament??

I played a guy at a UK GT with Orcs and Goblins who's unit of Trolls were all Lord of the Rings models, and everyone was fine with it.

Excellent- I really wanted to make a unit of Spirit Hosts, but let's be honest the existing models are horrible, so I've been trying to think of alternatives

Yeah they are pretty bad, the Ringwraith models make perfect alternatives

Heck, I've seen people take random models and paint them like ghosts.

I even saw oine guy do up really nice bases with NO models. He said, "They're ghosts - they're invisible!"

Legality or lack thereof is entirely dependent on the tournament you're going to. You should be just fine, but if you're still worried, the only person who can really answer the question for you is the tournament director.

A quick email will sort out your question nice and quick if the tournament rulespack hasn't laid it down already. Most I've seen specify early in the pack (all miniatures must be GW, or you may have up to 3 from another manufacturer).

Even the most restrictive don't seem to require you to use the specific game. For a while, there was a caveat around Lord of the Rings minis, but I think that had to do with some copyright agreements or something that aren't an issue any more.

It is only official GW events where there are issues with their licence - if you use LotR models in another army they cannot win Best Painted as they cannot photograph the models as being "warhammer fantasy army". So they usually let you play with them, but not be able to win.

A friend has many ent treemen, as it is a much better model than the WHFB one!

Another quick question for you guys, which didn't really rate a new thread-

Can I enter tournaments with models painted using NON-Citadel paints??

I ask because I've recently decided to try different sets (vallejo, Reaper etc) for painting models, but as I would like to actually PLAY with my planned Vampire Counts army in future tournaments I need to know if I have to stick to GW paints, and leave the Vallejo to 'friendly armies'?

I think you'll be fine. I doubt GW will take the time to verify your paints. In fact, I don't think they have active rule about this.

There are probably only a small handful of people in the world that have any chance of being able to tell just by looking which line of paints you've used. I feel pretty confident that you're safe.
