Trim them occasionally. If there's nothing there, you'll look like a ten year old, but having too much is just nasty. Just a bit is nice. Keep it trimmed and tidy. Keeps you warm in the winter too.

lolwut? If your talking about brushes, lmk.

Good tip though. If you're big enough, the ladies don't mind it trimmed,in fact, they prefer it. Less is more

Well, I meant trimmed, obviously. It is not wise to venture into mirkwood forest alone.

On the actural topic I think the Op was refering to, you should keep brushes upright in a cup. Always wash the paint out of them and if they start to get hard I suggest you do to the basin and wash them in hot water getting your fingers into the brush hair to get the paint out.

Actually it's better if you use cold water and a bit of dish soap, reason being that the hot water will cause the metal in the ferrule (the metal part of the brush) to expand, and that loosens the bristles and eventually makes it impossible for them to form a tip.

Dish soap's a bad idea, actually, since it strips the natural oil from the brushes.
Your best bet is a decent brush cleaner/conditioner and you get get them pretty cheaply, too.
I've had great luck with pink soap- http://www.dickblick.com/products/pink-soap-artist-brush-cleaner/

That's a good one, as well, and the only reason I don't use it more often is because i just prefer a liquid.

I use denatured Alcohol to clean all my brushes. Just stir your brush in it and wipe it off. That easy. Never had any problems with it before. Makes a great paint stripper too.

When you're painting lick the tip of your brush every time you wash it, keeps it pointy.

Or if you dont want to lick it, lick your fingers and spread them along the brush. Thats what I do.

I use liquid soap and cold water to clean them, and use my fingers to remove all the pain on them.

Finally, after use and cleaning, I wet my fingers a little on solid vaseline and make the tip of the brush pointy.

I involuntarily clean the brush with my mouth. Sort of an ocd thing. Well, sort of. Only if I'm doing really small details, like red ork eyes. Why bother cleaning off that speck of blood red when I can just lick it?
