This is my first time making a tutorial for 40k so i hope it's helpfull and has not been posted before

Anyhow in this tutorial i will explain you how to make easy landmine markers with just abit of sprue and a 25mm base.

Complete lost of things you need:

-Some bits of sprue with those round circles on them both a bigger and smaller one
-Plastic glue (any will do)
-A good hobby knife (or a scalpel like i use)
-25mm base
-Sand (can be from GW but i used bird cage sand)
-PVA Glue (or any other wood glue)

So lets start shall we:

Once you collected all your prue bits carefully cut off the round bits till you have something like this:

Remeber that it doesn't have to be entirely evenly cut becouse it will only help making it look more realistic that the mines weren't all dug into the ground perfectly

Second if you like me have a boat load of the 25mm slit bases and wish to save your sealed ones for other purposes cover the slit with abit of tape (if you don't have a slit base you can obviously skip this step).
.
Once you'v put the tape on there carefully cut away the parts of tape you don't need as we only want it to cover the slit.

Now put some small drops of glue on random spots and put the bigger round resin bits on them and softly press on them to ensure they get glue'd onto the base right

Then repeat the same step with the smaller bits onto the bigger ones.

Now put a few drops of PVA/Wood glue onto the base and even it out with a old brush or like i did with a tooth pick

Incase you used the slit base with the tape you might need to apply abit more than your used to becouse it doesn't stick very well to the tape

And then dip the entire thing upside down into your sand.

Wait a few seconds then take it back out and clean off the sand from the mine bits and you should have something like this:

all that remains now is abit of chaos black (or whatever primer you use) and then color them in any way you like

Final Result:

i'd put the primer on before you put on the sand...
but otherwise it seems pretty awesome

Thanks for the tip! I think these look a little big, but if you thinned them up a bit, I reckon they'd be perfect. Great use of sprue!

that can work too but i used bird sand which is 100% white and i don't realy like the looks of white sand

Your quite welcome
Sprues can be usefull for quite alot of things i also use them to make bricks for basing but i don't think that needs a tutorial

I agree with painting after applying certain basing materials. Not all basing material
looks "right" in their natural colors.

I think painting the sand and such looks, strangely, more natural than the sand without paint. Goes better with the models themselves

The land mines are awesome. They look really good, especially considering they're made out of sprues. I'll be using this

This is mostly a matter of 'scale' oddly enough. Sands are scaled by reducing the detail level through paint and the paint also pulls the base into the aesthetic of the model.

Great little idea too for the mines btw. I would likely thin the pieces down by slicing them in half to play more to the look of true mines, it also gives you more material to work with and create more mines .

Consider the idea stolen - i've been looking for a simple minefield marker for a while and got plenty of bits sitting around to make some of these realy quick.

WHEN I eventually get round to making some i'll be sure to come and post pics. I'll also probably use termy sized bases for mine.

Good work!

Well you still need to buy the base packs but it comes with 25 of those slit bases so plenty of mines to make

Well, I am going to base them on mdf that I have around so no base pack needed for me. These should do well in our COD campain this fall.

neat.

I must ask... what gaming value would a 40mm base full of shoe mines have?

Dangerous terrain I imagine. Just indicate there's a dangerzone 2" around each base, scatter a half dozen about and you've got a pretty functional piece of terrain.

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, but for the image with finished paint on the mine bases, is that static grass?
