The Last Chancer Who Survived

Hey kids
So for my next project I want to start a necron army because I don't have enough army men, I want them to look ancient as in all rusty. I want to do some extreme weathering and make them look like they're super dirty and worn out.
I have a set of Doc Browns weathering powders (something like that) from Micro Mark. I've used them on some warmachine stuff and liked the effect so I want to do that with my necrons too.
Just wondering, what's the best way to go?
1) Paint them with a brown base coat, wash with badab black, splotch on some oranges (both paint and powders), and some scratches with boltgun metal maybe around joint areas and edges of the blades?
2) base coat boltgun metal, use lots of washes followed by brown, orange and black powders?
3) other ideas?
This is gonna be a really long term modeling project, I'm thinking I'd be building up my basic troops over the next 6+ months, and I'd really like each model to stand out and look great, instead of my usual assembly line finish em quick style. I want em to look like they were made of iron and are rusting away, no colors or chipped paint or anything like that. just bare metal. The guns I would want to look like a blackened iron, I thought about bronze but the green tarnish the bronze gets would make the green gun rods not really stand out as much.
So just wondering if anyone has any good ideas for an extreme rust effect using just regular citadel paints and some powders?

#1 Sounds like it could look pretty nice.
I rust pretty much everything metal in my Ork army. Ive learned that if you base black, brush boltgun metal over then, then glob on the orange and literally wipe most the orange off with your finger it gives it a nice worn look. For some reason doing it that way, rubs some spots down to the black base, so it kindda smeers from the black to boltgun to the orange rusty parts.
Give it a shot on something you might actually like it, I know I like how it turns out on most things
Good luck on the Necrons. Someday I think Ill start a crons army too

Try using gray, and highlight it Then go over it with Pigments. This way it will stick better and the rust will show some color through it. Considering if the metal is Extremely rusty like you want it, there really wouldnt be a super bright shine.

I think I'm gonna go with #1 I got some rustoleum red primer a while back that comes out more like dark brown, so I figured I'd use that for my base coat. That plus a wash of black should give me a really good dark brown. Or maybe I'll do that, then oranges, then the wash. I dunno
but I was thinking of using boltgun metal really just for things like scratches or spots around the joints like where the metal parts would rub together and scratch away the rust.
For the monolith I was thinking of trying something different and scratch building a mayan looking pyramid with foam and stuff, but it's crumbling away revealing parts of a monolith under it.. like those crazy old indians built a stone pyramid over a monolith to hide it, then one day it started flying.

I use Rustoleum red primer for my ork vehicles for it's rusty color as well. A light drybrushing of boltgun metal over it so the primer stays visible looks great to achieve rusty metal, especially with some devlin mud applied afterwords.
Also, an easy way to do edging like you describe is to buy some fine tipped silver markers (I use the "Sharpie metallic silver" brand) and use them like a paint pen to do your worn edging. The pens are easy to control, quick to dry, and you can make some really fine wear with them which is nice on infantry models, but work on vehicles as well.. I'll never go back to doing edge wear with a brush again...

Hmm I didn't think of that. I'll look for those pens is it something you'd find in an art store? or more like an office supply store?

I bought mine at Staples (office supply), they came in a two-pack.
I have done scores of models and they are still going strong. I used them on the Warboss model pictured in my avatar and in my gallery btw...
My sons and I would like a second non-Imperium "bad guy" army, and we are thinking of Necrons as well, but we are gonna wait to see the new codex first. If we do them we plan to do them rusty/worn metallic as well, so I'm curious to see how your models come out...
